Day Collars, Play Collars and Protocol: A Guide for Submissives
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-08 · 6 min read

A collar is the most meaningful object in many D/s relationships. Fastening it marks the moment you step into submission; wearing it reminds you of who you belong to; taking it off is a small ceremony of its own. In this guide I explain the difference between a day collar and a play collar, how to choose one, what collar protocol looks like, and how to build collar rituals if you practise alone with audio.
What Is a Day Collar?
A day collar is a collar designed to be worn in public, in daily life, without anyone else knowing what it means. It looks like ordinary jewellery: a slim choker, a chain with a small lock or ring, a bracelet, an anklet. To the wearer and their Dominant, it is a constant sign of belonging.
The idea is simple and powerful. You go to work, see friends, run errands, and all the while you are wearing something that says you are owned. Nobody else knows. That private awareness is the whole point.
Day Collar vs Play Collar

Most collared subs end up with both. They do different jobs.
| Day collar | Play collar | |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | Jewellery: choker, chain, bracelet | Obvious collar: leather, metal, D-ring |
| Worn | All day, in public | During scenes and sessions only |
| Purpose | Constant private reminder | Marks the scene, can attach a lead |
| Comfort priority | Very high, worn for hours | Moderate, worn for shorter periods |
| Removal | Often only at night or for sport | At the end of every scene |
Some people add a third, a formal collar, for special occasions or ceremonies, similar to how others treat an engagement ring.
Choosing a Day Collar
Good day collars share four qualities: discreet, comfortable, durable and personal.
Discreet options:
- A thin metal choker or torque that sits at the base of the neck.
- A fine chain with a tiny padlock or O-ring pendant.
- A bracelet or bangle, ideal if necklaces are impractical at work.
- An anklet, hidden under trousers or socks.
- A ring worn on a specific finger, chosen together.
Fit and safety:
- Anything around the neck should allow two fingers to slide underneath comfortably.
- Choose hypoallergenic metals such as stainless steel, titanium or sterling silver to avoid skin irritation.
- Make sure a neck collar can be removed quickly, with a clasp or a key kept within reach. Never sleep in a tight or locked neck collar.
- Check for rough edges that rub over hours of wear.
If privacy matters to you, the wrist or ankle is often the safest choice. My guide on keeping your sissy side private covers the same principle for clothing.
Choosing a Play Collar

Play collars can be bolder: wide leather with a buckle, steel with a lock, a pink posture collar for sissy scenes. Look for:
- Padded or rolled edges so the collar does not cut in when you lower your head.
- A buckle with several holes for fine adjustment.
- A sturdy D-ring if you want to attach a lead for scenes.
- Width that suits your neck; very tall posture collars restrict movement and are for short scenes only.
Collar Protocol: Rules That Give It Meaning
A collar without protocol is just an accessory. Protocol is what makes it a symbol. Here are rules many collared subs follow; choose five or six that fit your life.
- Kneel to be collared. Put the collar on (or have it put on) while kneeling in nadu or waiting. See the kneeling positions guide.
- Say a collaring phrase. For example: “I accept my collar and my place.”
- Touch it to centre yourself. When stressed, touch the collar and take one slow breath.
- Never remove it without permission or a set reason. Allowed reasons might be showering, sport, medical appointments or security checks.
- Thank on removal. A short phrase when taking it off: “Thank you for holding me today.”
- Care for it. Clean it weekly and store it in the same place each night.
- Behaviour while collared. Some subs keep specific rules only while collared: no swearing, posture checks, panties under clothes.
- Report. A daily check-in noting how many times you touched the collar and why.
How strict to be is a question of protocol level, which I cover in high protocol vs low protocol.
The Collaring Ceremony

The first time a collar is fastened deserves a ritual. A simple version:
- Clean and prepare the space: lights low, phone silent.
- Kneel on a cushion with the collar held out in both hands, palms up (the present position).
- Read or recite a short statement of what the collar means to you and what rules you accept.
- Fasten the collar, or have it fastened.
- Remain in waiting position for a few minutes, simply feeling it.
- Write the date and your rules in a journal.
With a partner, the Dominant fastens the collar and accepts the statement. Solo, the audio or your written rules take that role.
Solo Collar Rituals With Audio
You do not need a Dominant in the room for a collar to mean something. Many of my listeners collar themselves as part of a daily practice, with the voice in their headphones acting as the one who holds the key.
A daily solo collar routine:
- Morning: kneel, fasten your day collar, say your phrase, and listen to a short session. Sissy Hypnosis in Five Minutes fits a busy morning.
- During the day: touch the collar whenever you notice it. Each touch is a tiny reminder.
- Evening: kneel, remove the collar, thank, and place it in its box.
- Weekly: clean the collar, review your rules, and adjust one if it is not working.
Turning the collar into an anchor
A collar is a natural hypnotic anchor because you feel it constantly. If you pair the sensation with a relaxed, submissive state during sessions, touching it later can bring back a little of that feeling. Anchored to Something Soft and Anchored to Warmth both work beautifully when you hold or wear the collar during the file. For the theory, read hypnotic anchors.
You can also tie the collar to an existing habit, such as fastening it right after brushing your teeth. Wired Into a Habit You Already Have is built on exactly that idea.
Common Collar Questions in Practice

- What if someone asks about it? A day collar should look like jewellery, so “I just like it” is a complete answer.
- What if I want a break? Taking a collar off for a while is not failure. Remove it with the same respect you put it on with, and decide on a date to revisit.
- What if it irritates my skin? Switch to titanium or surgical steel, keep it clean and dry, and give the skin a night off when needed.
- Can I wear it to the gym or swimming? Take a neck collar off for contact sport, heavy lifting and swimming. A bracelet or ring version is a good substitute so the reminder never fully disappears.
- Should I lock a day collar? Small locking chokers exist, but a locked neck piece is impractical at airports, hospitals and work. A lock charm on a normal clasp keeps the symbolism without the risk.
- How do I clean it? Mild soap and warm water for metal, a soft cloth to dry; leather needs a damp wipe and occasional conditioner, never soaking.
A sample set of solo collar rules
- Fasten the day collar every morning while kneeling, with the collaring phrase.
- Touch it and breathe slowly before any stressful moment.
- Remove it only for sleep, sport, swimming or appointments.
- Wear panties whenever the collar is on.
- Kneel, thank and box it every night.
- Note any day it was skipped in the journal, with the reason.
If collar protocol is part of a wider sissy journey, the Sissy Academy path introduces rituals, obedience and anchors in an order that lets each one settle before the next.
Frequently asked questions
What is a day collar?
A day collar is a discreet piece of jewellery, such as a slim choker, a chain with a small lock, a bracelet or an anklet, that a submissive wears in everyday life as a private symbol of belonging to their Dominant. It looks ordinary to others but carries a personal meaning for the wearer.
What is the difference between a day collar and a play collar?
A day collar is subtle, comfortable jewellery worn all day in public. A play collar is an obvious leather or metal collar, often with a D-ring, worn only during scenes. Many submissives have both: the day collar as a constant reminder and the play collar to mark scene time.
How tight should a collar be?
You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably between the collar and your neck. A collar should never restrict breathing, swallowing or blood flow, and a neck collar should be removable quickly. Never sleep in a tight or locked neck collar.
Can you wear a collar without a Dominant?
Yes. Many submissives collar themselves as part of a solo practice, using written rules, a collaring ritual and audio sessions to give the collar meaning. The collar becomes a daily reminder of their submission and a useful anchor for a relaxed, focused headspace.
What are common collar protocol rules?
Common rules include kneeling to be collared, saying a set phrase when it goes on and comes off, removing it only for agreed reasons such as showering or sport, touching it to centre yourself, caring for it weekly, and following specific behaviour rules while wearing it.
