Strap-On O-Ring Sizes: How to Match Ring to Dildo Base

By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-19 · 3 min read

strap on o ring size
Most harness O-rings measure between 1.5 and 2.5 inches (about 38 to 63 mm) across. Choose a ring slightly narrower than the widest part of the dildo base, so the base cannot pull through but still sits flat. Measure the base, not the shaft, and test before use.

The O-ring is the small hole at the front of the harness that holds the dildo in place. If it is the wrong size, the toy droops, twists, pulls through or digs into the wearer. Getting the ring size right is a ten-minute job with a tape measure, and it saves a lot of frustration later.

What the O-ring does

On a standard harness, the dildo's base is pushed through the ring from behind, so the flared base sits against the wearer's body and the shaft sticks out in front. The ring is a rigid loop of metal or plastic, sewn into the harness strap or fitted to a removable panel. It must be tight enough to stop the base from pulling through and loose enough to let the shaft pass.

That is why the ring is sized against the base, not the shaft. A shaft can be thin and still have a wide base.

Common O-ring sizes

Sizes are quoted as the inner diameter of the ring. Typical ranges:

Ring (inner diameter)Approx. mmTypical use
1.5 inch38Slim toys, small bases
1.75 inch44Common starter size
2 inch50The most widespread ring
2.25 inch57Wider bases
2.5 inch63Large toys, bulky bases

Many harnesses ship with a single ring, often 2 inch, and offer others as swap-in options. Always check the product's specification instead of assuming.

How to measure

You need two numbers: the ring's inner diameter and the dildo's base.

  1. Ring. Measure straight across the hole at its widest point. A ruler or calipers works; a flexible tape works if you measure the circumference and divide by 3.14.
  2. Base. Measure the flared base at its widest point, again straight across.
  3. Neck. Measure the narrowest part just above the base, where the shaft meets the flare. This is the part that sits in the ring.

You want the ring's inner diameter to fall between the neck and the base. The base must be larger than the hole so it cannot slip through, and the neck must be smaller so that it can sit snugly.

Rule of thumb: ring diameter about 3 to 6 millimetres smaller than the base. If the base is 55 mm, a 50 mm ring (2 inch) is a good match. Silicone compresses slightly, so a tight fit is easier than it looks.

When the ring is too large

When the ring is too large, Aria Wilde

Fixes: swap in a smaller ring, or use a toy with a wider base. Do not try to fix it with tape or rubber bands, which loosen under motion and can fail at a bad moment.

When the ring is too small

Fixes: use a larger ring, or choose a dildo with a narrower base. Forcing a base through a tight ring can tear silicone or distort the harness.

Swapping rings

Many harnesses use removable rings held by snaps, Velcro or a rivet. To change one:

  1. Open the front panel and remove the ring from its slot.
  2. Fit the new ring in the same orientation.
  3. Test with the toy before you put the harness on.
  4. Check for gaps, especially if the harness uses a hook-and-loop panel.

Rings come in stainless steel, rubber or plastic. Steel is durable and rigid. Rubber grips the base better. Plastic is light but may crack. If you plan to use several toys, buying a set with multiple ring sizes pays off.

Vac-U-Lock and other systems

Some harnesses use a plug-and-socket system, such as Vac-U-Lock, instead of an O-ring. The toy has a socket in the base and screws onto a plug on the harness. These need no ring sizing but require compatible toys. For anything else, see what dildos fit a harness.

If you are still choosing a harness, how to choose a strap-on harness compares styles, and how to put on a strap-on harness covers the fit. A bigger toy changes everything, so see the pegging dildo size guide before moving up.

Frequently asked questions

What size O-ring do I need for a strap-on?

Measure the widest part of the dildo base and the narrowest part of the neck, then choose a ring slightly smaller than the base, typically 3 to 6 mm. The common 2 inch (50 mm) ring suits many bases.

Can I use any dildo with an O-ring harness?

Only toys with a flared base wider than the ring. Dildos without a base, or with a narrow one, can pull through. Check the specification for base diameter before buying.

What happens if the O-ring is too big?

The toy will droop, tilt or slide through during use. Swap in a smaller ring or use a dildo with a wider base. Do not tape it in place.

Can I change the O-ring on my harness?

Yes, on most models. The ring is usually held by snaps, a rivet or Velcro. Remove it, fit the new one in the same orientation, and test it with the toy before use.
