Abreaction: meaning
Also: emotional release, hypnotic abreaction, catharsis in trance

Abreaction is what it looks like when a feeling you were holding comes loose. In hypnosis it usually means tears, a wave of sadness, shaking or a sudden burst of emotion that seems to come from nowhere.
What abreaction means
The word has roots in early psychoanalysis, where it described the discharge of repressed emotion after recalling a painful event. In modern hypnosis it is broader: any strong, spontaneous emotional release during or just after a session. It is different from the planned emotional response a script is designed to create. An abreaction is unscripted.
Why it happens

Trance relaxes the habits we use to keep feelings contained. Muscles loosen, the inner monitor quietens and attention turns inward. A stray image, a phrase, a smell or a memory can then trigger emotion that you did not know was close. It is common after a stressful week, a loss, or when working on shame and acceptance themes.
What it looks like
- sudden crying or a lump in the throat
- trembling, goosebumps or shaking
- laughter that turns to tears
- a rush of anger, fear or tenderness
- a sense of relief afterwards, as if something lifted
Most are mild. Strong ones are rare in everyday listening.
What to do if it happens

- Do not fight it. Breathe slowly and let it move through.
- Stay with the session or pause it. Pausing is always allowed.
- Ground yourself. Feel your feet, hands, the surface under you; name five things you can see.
- Wake yourself fully. Count up from one to five, as with an awakener.
- Look after yourself. Water, warmth, a quiet few minutes. This is what aftercare is for.
- Write it down. A short note often shows what the emotion was about.
What to do if it happens to your partner
Slow down, soften your voice and stop any suggestions in progress. Say something simple: "You're safe, you're here, take your time." Do not ask for explanations. Offer water and a blanket. Resume only if they clearly want to; otherwise finish with a gentle emergence. If someone is distressed for more than a few minutes, end the session and stay with them.
Abreaction vs sub drop
Sub drop is a delayed low that follows intense scenes, often hours later. Abreaction occurs during the session or right after. They can overlap, and the same kindness helps with both.
Does it mean something is wrong?
No. Emotion in trance is common, and for many people it is the most valuable part of a session. If strong feelings recur around the same theme, take them seriously: slow down, change topic or talk to someone you trust. Hypnosis files cannot replace therapy for trauma. A single sentence of caution is enough here: if a file regularly brings up distress you cannot settle, stop using it.
In my files
Acceptance work, especially anything involving shame, can bring feelings up. Sissy Acceptance Without the Shame and Why Do I Feel Ashamed After are written to meet that gently. See also crying during hypnosis and sissy shame and acceptance.
Examples in a sentence
- "I had an abreaction in the middle of the session and just cried for a minute."
- "Abreactions are normal and usually pass quickly."
- "The hypnotist slowed down when she saw signs of abreaction."
Frequently asked questions
Is abreaction dangerous?
Usually not. It is a natural release that passes within minutes. It is uncomfortable rather than harmful. Pause, breathe, ground yourself and wake fully. Persistent or severe distress is a sign to stop and seek support from a professional.
Why did I cry during hypnosis?
Deep relaxation lowers the guard that normally holds emotion back, so held feelings surface. Crying is common and often leaves people feeling lighter. It does not mean the session failed.
Can I avoid abreactions?
You cannot fully prevent them, but you can lower the odds. Choose gentler themes when you are stressed, keep sessions short and make sure you can pause at any time. Most people never have a strong one.
