Binaural beats: meaning
Also: binaural, binaural audio beats, brainwave entrainment, binaural tones

Binaural beats are a trick of hearing. Play 200 Hz in your left ear and 210 Hz in your right, and you will hear a soft wobble pulsing ten times per second. That pulse does not exist in either track; your brain creates it by combining the two. The question people really ask is whether that pulse does anything else.
What binaural beats mean
Binaural means "two ears". The effect was described by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839, and became popular in self-help audio from the 1970s. To hear it you need headphones, because each ear must receive only its own tone. Through speakers the tones mix in the air and the effect disappears.
Producers usually aim the beat at a brainwave band:
| Band | Frequency | Associated with |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | 0.5 to 4 Hz | deep sleep |
| Theta | 4 to 8 Hz | drowsiness, trance |
| Alpha | 8 to 12 Hz | relaxed wakefulness |
| Beta | 13 to 30 Hz | alert focus |
The idea, called entrainment, is that your brainwaves follow the beat.
What the evidence shows

Honestly: mixed and modest. Some studies find small improvements in self-reported relaxation and anxiety, for example before surgery, and a 2018 meta-analysis found a small-to-moderate effect on anxiety and some cognitive measures. But many of those studies are small and use weak controls, and EEG studies looking for brainwaves actually locking to the beat have produced inconsistent results; several found no reliable entrainment at all. A reasonable summary is: binaural beats can help some people relax a little, partly through the soothing sound itself and partly through expectation, and they are not a switch for your brain.
What they don't do
No good evidence supports claims that binaural beats get you high, change hormones, cause physical transformations or hypnotize you on their own. A binaural track is not hypnosis. It has no induction, no suggestions, no structure.
Binaural beats in hypnosis and ASMR audio

Many hypnosis files add a low binaural bed under the voice, usually in the theta range, because it adds a gentle, immersive texture and many listeners associate it with going under. That association becomes its own conditioning: if you hear the same hum every session, the hum starts to signal time to drop.
Do not confuse binaural beats with binaural recording, the ASMR technique using two microphones in a dummy head so whispers sound like they move around you. Different thing, same word. The guide erotic hypnosis vs ASMR explains how voice, space and trance combine. The close cousin of binaural beats is isochronic tones, which do not need headphones.
Are binaural beats safe?
Yes for most people at a sensible volume. People with epilepsy or seizure history are usually advised to avoid rhythmic stimulation without medical advice. Keep the volume low; the effect does not get stronger by getting louder.
Examples in a sentence
- "There's a theta binaural bed under the whole file, it hums the second I put headphones on."
- "Binaural beats help me settle, but the voice is what actually puts me in trance."
- "Remember: binaural beats only work with headphones, speakers cancel them out."
Frequently asked questions
Do binaural beats really work?
They reliably create the perception of a beat. Their effect on mood is modest: some studies show small reductions in anxiety and improved relaxation, but results are inconsistent and the evidence that brainwaves actually sync to the beat is weak. Treat them as a relaxing sound layer, not a brain-changing technology.
Do I need headphones for binaural beats?
Yes. Each ear has to hear only its own tone so the brain can create the difference beat. Through speakers the two tones mix acoustically before reaching you and the binaural effect is lost. Standard earbuds work fine; expensive headphones are not necessary.
Can binaural beats hypnotize you?
Not on their own. Hypnosis needs focused attention and suggestion, which a tone cannot supply. Binaural beats can make it easier to relax, and if you always hear them during trance they can become a conditioned cue for going under. The voice and structure of a file do the hypnotic work.
