Dungeon: meaning
Also: play dungeon, bdsm dungeon, home dungeon, playroom

Say "dungeon" to a vanilla friend and they picture stone walls and torches. In kink it usually means something much more practical: a room with a lot of sturdy hooks.
What a dungeon is
A dungeon is any space designed for BDSM play. Two main kinds exist:
- Public (or club) dungeons: commercial or community venues with several play stations, a social area and staff. You usually pay for entry, show ID and sign the house rules.
- Private or home dungeons: a spare room, basement, garage corner or even a locked wardrobe of gear that turns a bedroom into a playroom on demand. "Playroom" is the more common word at home.
A third type is the professional dungeon run by a dominatrix for paying clients, with themed rooms for different kinds of sessions.
Public dungeon vs home dungeon
| public dungeon | home dungeon | |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | other people may watch | fully private |
| Equipment | large and varied, shared | whatever you buy and install |
| Safety backup | staff, a dungeon monitor | you and your partner only |
| Etiquette | strict house rules | your own |
| Good for | learning, trying gear, being seen | regular play, long sessions |
Typical equipment
Public spaces often have a spanking bench, a St. Andrew's cross, a suspension frame, a cage, a table and a rack of implements. At home people start small: eyebolts in joists, a bed with restraint points, a sturdy bench, a storage trunk with cuffs, a spreader bar, floggers and a first-aid kit. Anything load-bearing must be bolted into a stud or joist, never into plasterboard alone.
Rules you will meet

Most public dungeons share a core set:
- Ask before touching anyone or their gear. Never touch another person's scene.
- Keep distance from scenes you watch and keep your voice low.
- Clean every surface after use, with the venue's disinfectant.
- Follow the venue's rules on alcohol, photos and clothing.
- A safeword or stop call from any player pauses the room.
Photography is almost always banned. Phones are put away or kept off the play floor.
Setting up a home playroom safely
- Keep scissors or safety shears within reach of any restraint.
- Fit blackout curtains if privacy matters and soft lighting if you want atmosphere.
- Plan for floors that wipe clean and a drain-friendly towel supply.
- Agree a scene negotiation before each session, even when the room is familiar.
The dungeon in fantasy and audio

In recordings, "the dungeon" is often a fantasy backdrop: a locked door, a cold floor, my heels on stone. Nobody needs a real one to enjoy the idea. The Sissy Academy path uses similar scene-setting to build atmosphere without any gear at all.
Examples in a sentence
- The club has three dungeons, one for each floor.
- We turned the spare bedroom into a small home dungeon.
- She booked a session at a professional dungeon in the city.
- Please clean the bench after you use the dungeon, it is house rules.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dungeon always underground?
No. The word comes from medieval castles, but modern BDSM dungeons can be on any floor. Many are converted flats, warehouses or ordinary rooms with extra fixings. Basements are common mostly because noise and privacy are easier to manage.
Can I build a dungeon at home?
Yes. Start with one sturdy bench or bed with safe restraint points, a first-aid kit and safety shears. Fix anything weight-bearing into studs or joists, keep the floor wipeable and add equipment only as you learn to use it.
What do you wear at a public dungeon?
Most venues allow fetish wear, leather, latex or smart-casual clothes, and ban street clothes that are dirty or offensive. Check the dress code first, bring clean shoes and carry a towel and your own wipes if you plan to play.
Do you have to play in a public dungeon?
No. Many people never go, and watching is often the main activity for newcomers. You can attend, observe and leave without participating. Nobody should pressure you to scene. Plenty of people prefer private rooms at home or never play at all, and that is a perfectly valid way to enjoy kink.
