Figging: meaning
Also: ginger play, ginger root play, figging kink

Figging sounds like a typo for "digging", but it is an old word with a surprisingly spicy history.
What figging means
Figging is the practice of using a shaped piece of fresh ginger root as a short-term plug. Within a few minutes the ginger releases gingerol, a chemical that stimulates heat-sensing nerves. The sensation is a deep, spreading burn that makes the wearer clench, squirm and focus on nothing else. It is used as sensation play, as a mild punishment in a discipline scene, or as a test of endurance and obedience.
Where the word comes from

Historical accounts describe horse dealers pushing ginger into a horse's rear so it would hold its tail high and look lively at sale. The same trick, called "feaguing" or "figging", appeared in 19th-century English slang. Whether or not you take that story as gospel, the practice moved from the stable to the playroom a long time ago, and the modern kink name is a straight inheritance.
Why it stings
Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, which activate the same heat receptors as chilli and hot water. Mucous membranes absorb them quickly, so the effect lands within two to five minutes and can last 10 to 30 minutes. Fresh, raw ginger is the one that works; dried or powdered ginger does not behave the same way.
How it is done

The usual method:
- Choose a fresh, firm ginger root and peel it fully.
- Carve it into a plug shape: tapered tip, narrow neck, flared base so it cannot slip inside.
- Wash and dry it. Some people smooth the surface so no rough edges remain.
- Use lube if needed (water-based) and insert gently once relaxed.
- Keep it for a short, pre-agreed period, then remove.
Beginners typically use a small piece for one to three minutes first. A bigger or longer-held plug can be extremely strong. The sensation tends to peak at around five to ten minutes.
Safety
- Never insert anything without a flared base. A retained plug needs a medical visit.
- Test a tiny piece on the inside of your arm for a few minutes first to see how you react.
- Avoid it if you have broken tissue, haemorrhoids, a skin condition or an allergy.
- Remove it at once if the pain becomes sharp or unbearable.
- Stop if you see swelling, hives or breathing issues.
- Wash your hands before and after handling ginger; the oils sting eyes and lips.
- Do not combine with heavy drinking.
Figging in play
A dominant might make a submissive hold a ginger plug during a scene while kneeling, counting or holding a pose. Others use it to enforce denial or as part of a predicament setup where moving makes the burn worse. In relationships built on protocol, it can function as a ritual punishment after a missed rule. As with all pain play, agree on duration, safeword and aftercare in advance.
Figging in fantasy and audio
It also works well in imagination. A calm description of heat creeping and a countdown makes a satisfying story beat without anything real, and some of my sessions use mock punishments in a similar way. For a taste of a controlled, rule-based scene, try Sissy Training: Do Nothing Until I Say.

Frequently asked questions
What is figging in BDSM?
Figging is a kink where a peeled, carved piece of fresh ginger root is inserted anally to cause an intense burning sensation. It is used for punishment, endurance or sensation play and requires careful safety steps.
How long does figging last?
The burn usually starts after two to five minutes, peaks around five to ten, and can linger up to half an hour after removal. Most beginners keep the plug in for only a minute or two.
Is figging safe?
It can be if you use fresh ginger shaped with a flared base, test for reactions first and stop if sharp pain, swelling or allergy signs appear. Avoid it with broken skin or irritated tissue, and never use ginger as a plug without a base.
Why is it called figging?
The term is old slang linked to horse dealers who used ginger to make animals look lively. The name stuck, and the kink adopted both the word and the technique.
