Hey sweetie. This is going to be slower than usual, and there is very little content in it in the way you might be used to from me. No task at the end tonight. Barely any story. Just one idea, returned to again and again, at a pace that gives it room to actually land: letting go. I want to be clear about what I mean by that, because the phrase gets used loosely elsewhere and I want you to know exactly what is on offer here. I do not mean anything sexual. I do not mean surrendering decision-making about your actual life to anyone. I mean something much smaller and, I think, much more useful tonight - putting down, for twenty minutes, the specific effort of holding everything together, which you have probably been doing for so long you no longer notice you are doing it at all. I suspect you already know, at least roughly, what that holding looks like for you specifically. For some people it is the constant management of how they appear to others. For some it is a running mental list that never fully clears. For some it is simply the effort of staying composed, hour after hour, regardless of what is actually happening underneath. Whatever shape it takes for you, notice that it is effort - real, ongoing, mostly invisible effort, spent every single day, that you have likely never gotten credit for, including from yourself. Tonight there is nothing to hold. No one is watching, no one is grading the result, no version of tonight requires you to have kept anything together at all. That is a strange, rare permission, and it is worth taking seriously rather than rushing past. Let your body find something that will hold its whole weight - a bed, a chair that does not need you to help it. Let your hands rest, palms wherever they want to be. Breathe in through your nose, slowly. Not a big breath. And out through your mouth, a little longer than it came in. Again. In, unhurried. Out, longer. And on this next breath out, let your jaw come loose. You have probably been holding it since some point today without noticing. Let the teeth separate slightly. Let the tongue rest. And another breath out, and let your shoulders drop away from your ears. They have been up there long enough that down feels unfamiliar - almost like slouching. It is not. That is just what unguarded feels like when you have not been it in a while. Let us start noticing the holding, because you cannot let go of something you cannot feel yourself gripping. Somewhere in your body right now, there is very likely a spot that has been braced, quietly, for hours or days or longer - a set jaw, tight shoulders, a stomach that never fully unclenches, hands that stay slightly curled even at rest. Find that spot now. You do not have to fix it yet. Just find it. Let me walk down through you once, and you do not have to help. Start at the top of your head, and let the scalp soften - muscles up there almost never get told they can stop. Down across the forehead, smoothing out. The ring of muscle around each eye letting go, so the eyes rest instead of aim. Your cheeks heavy. Your jaw already loose, and looser now. Down the back of the neck, lengthening without you stretching it. Into the shoulders, which always have further to fall than you expect. Along the upper arms, heavy, into the forearms, the wrists, all the way to the fingertips, where you might feel warmth, or a faint pulse, or nothing in particular. Any of those is right. Your chest rising and falling without supervision. Your stomach unclenching - that one hides. The whole length of your back settling into whatever is underneath it. Your hips loosening their grip. Down through the thighs, heavy now, past the knees, along the calves, into the ankles, and out through your feet. That is all of you accounted for. None of it needs you for the next few minutes. I want to go slower and deeper than that, because tonight is about going further down than usual. Let me walk through your body a second time, more slowly, and this time, as I name each part, let it get heavier than it already is - heavier than gravity alone would pull it. Your eyelids, heavier than they have been all day. Your jaw, hanging loose now, not just relaxed but genuinely without tension, the way it is when you are actually asleep rather than merely resting. Your neck, letting your head be fully supported by whatever is under it, no muscle doing any of the holding anymore. Your shoulders, dropping past where they dropped the first time. There is always a little further they can go once the first layer of tension has already released. Let them find that further point now. Your arms, entirely without effort, from the shoulder all the way to the fingertips. Not resting - abandoned, in the gentlest sense of that word, the way you abandon a held breath when you finally let it go. Your chest and stomach, soft all the way through, nothing braced anywhere in there anymore. Your hips, your thighs, your calves, your feet - each one heavier than the last, sinking slightly further into whatever is underneath you, as though gravity has quietly gotten a little stronger just for you, just for the next few minutes. I am going to count down from ten, and you do not have to do anything with the numbers. Just let them pass. Ten. Settling. Nine, the back of your head a little heavier against whatever is holding it. Eight. Your breathing finding its own pace without you steering it. Seven, warmth arriving in your hands. Six. Whatever you were carrying around in your head is still there, and it can wait. Five, the muscles in your face going soft. Four. Heavier. Comfortable. Three, your chest and stomach loosening further. Two. Almost nothing left to hold. And one. Just here. Just listening. Good. Now go slower still. I am going to count down again, more slowly this time, and I want you to imagine, with each number, releasing a little more of the specific effort of holding everything together - your image, your schedule, the careful management of what other people see when they look at you. Ten. Let go of today. Nine. Let go of tomorrow's plans, just for now. They will still be there. Eight. Let go of how you look right now, to nobody, since nobody is watching. Seven. Let go of the last argument you were still quietly finishing in your head. Six. Let go of the effort of being impressive, capable, in control. None of it is required here. Five. Let go of the specific muscle you use to hold your face a certain way for other people. Nobody is here but you. Four. Let go of the need to understand exactly what is happening to you right now. Understanding can come later, if it comes at all. Three. Let go of the last bit of resistance to just being handled gently, for once, without having to manage any part of it yourself. Two. Almost nothing left to hold. One. Just here. Nothing gripped. Nothing performed. Good. That is what letting go actually feels like, physically, when you finally stop doing the thing you have been doing for so long you forgot it was optional. Now, very quietly, underneath all of that release, there is a fact I want to say once, gently, without any pressure attached to it landing tonight in particular. You are a sissy. That does not need holding onto either. It does not need defending, or managing, or gripped tightly the way you grip everything else. It can simply rest here, the way the rest of you is resting, requiring nothing from you at all. Stay here as long as you want to. There is no clock running on this. When you are ready to come back up - and there is no hurry - come back slowly, the way you would rise from somewhere very deep, giving yourself more time than you think you need. There is no wrong way to come back. Some people surface quickly, alert within a minute, ready to move on with the evening. Others take much longer, staying in this loose, unhurried state for a while after the words have stopped, and that is equally fine. Do not measure yourself against how quickly you think you are supposed to return. There is no schedule, and nobody is timing you the way there was nobody timing anything else tonight. If you do have to get up and function again soon - an alarm, a responsibility waiting on the other side of this - take one full minute before you do anything else. Wiggle your fingers first, then your toes, small movements before large ones, the way you would ease back into cold water rather than diving straight in. Rushing the return tends to bring a version of the earlier tension right back with it, undoing some of what the last twenty minutes just built. A slow return protects what you just did here. One last thing before I let you go. Whatever you were holding onto before tonight will likely find its way back into your hands over the coming hours, because that is simply how ongoing responsibilities work - they do not stay set down forever just because you set them down once. That is fine, and expected, and not a sign that tonight failed to do anything. The value of tonight was never permanent removal. It was proof, felt directly in your body rather than just believed as an idea, that the grip can loosen when you choose to loosen it. That proof stays true even after you inevitably pick everything back up tomorrow. Notice, as you come back, how much lighter the usual holding feels, at least for a little while. That lightness fades eventually, because the day reasserts its ordinary demands. But you now know, in your body and not just as an idea, that the grip is a choice you are making constantly rather than a fixed, unchangeable fact about how you have to live. Knowing that changes something, even after the specific feeling of tonight has faded. You can come back to this exact state again, any time you need it, without waiting for a night when everything else has gotten heavy enough to justify it. Letting go does not have to be earned through exhaustion first. It is available on ordinary nights too, whenever holding everything together starts to feel like more than you want to keep doing alone for a while. When you have finished listening, if you feel like it, leave me a comment. Not for the algorithm - I do not care about that, and neither do you. Just tell me you were here. There are more of you than you think, and every one of them believed they were the only one until they scrolled down. I am proud of you for staying to the end of this. That took something, and I know it did. There is nothing to be ashamed of here. You are allowed to be exactly what you are, tonight and tomorrow and for as long as you like. There was nowhere to hold on tonight, and you managed it anyway. That is worth more than it might feel like right now, so soon after coming back up.
