Breathing Techniques for Hypnosis: Box Breathing, Long Exhale and Counting
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-19 · 3 min read

Breathing is the quickest way to prepare for hypnosis. A slow breath with a longer exhale than inhale nudges the nervous system towards rest, which makes any induction land faster. Three minutes of deliberate breathing before a file does more than most people expect, and it needs no equipment.
Why breathing works
Your breath is the one automatic body function you can steer. Slow breathing, particularly a long exhale, activates the part of the nervous system that lowers heart rate and muscle tension. Fast, shallow breathing does the opposite. Hypnosis inductions use pacing and counting because they trade on the same mechanism: if your breath slows, your mind follows.
Breathing also gives your attention a job. A busy mind needs something to hold. Following the breath keeps it occupied without effort until the voice takes over.
Four techniques to try
| Technique | Pattern | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long exhale | In 4, out 6 to 8 | 3 minutes | Everyday prep, the easiest start |
| Box breathing | In 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4 | 3 to 4 minutes | A racing mind, focus before a file |
| 4-7-8 breathing | In 4, hold 7, out 8 | 4 rounds | Sleep files, bedtime |
| Breath counting | Count each exhale, 1 to 10, repeat | 5 minutes | Tense days, quieting thoughts |
Long exhale. Sit or lie comfortably. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four and let the belly rise. Breathe out gently through slightly parted lips for six to eight counts, as if fogging a mirror. Repeat for three minutes.
Box breathing. Imagine tracing the sides of a square. Four counts in, four counts holding, four counts out, four counts holding. Keep the movement smooth, and stop if you feel dizzy. Shorten the holds to two counts if four is uncomfortable.
4-7-8 breathing. Breathe in through the nose for four, hold for seven, and exhale through the mouth for eight with a soft whoosh. Do four rounds. The long hold can feel strong; start with three rounds and build up.
Breath counting. Breathe naturally. Count "one" on the first exhale, "two" on the next, up to ten, then start again. If you lose count, go back to one without self-criticism. After a few minutes your thoughts quiet.
Belly versus chest
Place one hand on your belly and one on your chest. On the inhale, the belly hand should rise more than the chest hand. Low, belly-led breathing signals safety to your body. If you find it hard, lie on your back with a light book on your belly and watch it rise and fall.
A three-minute routine before a file
- Get into position and close your eyes. Check that your shoulders are loose.
- Take two deep breaths with a sigh on the exhale.
- Do 10 rounds of long-exhale breathing, in for 4 and out for 6 to 8.
- Count the next five breaths from five to one.
- Press play and let your breathing return to natural.
If you want to build on this, the self hypnosis for beginners routine puts it into an induction, and the progressive muscle relaxation script pairs breath with body relaxation.
Breathing during the file

Most guided hypnosis files use your breath as an anchor: "with each breath out, sink deeper". Follow it gently without forcing. If you notice yourself holding your breath during intense moments, remind yourself to exhale. Slow breath also keeps arousal in check when a file builds tension, which is useful with longer sessions.
Common problems
- Light-headedness. You are breathing too hard or holding too long. Return to natural breathing and shorten the pattern.
- Anxiety rising. Some people feel worse when they focus on their breath. Count something else, such as numbers going down, or press your feet into the floor.
- Mouth dryness. Breathe in through the nose and sip water before the session.
- Blocked nose. Use slow mouth breathing with a soft exhale.
- Falling asleep. That is a good sign for sleep files, but sit more upright for focus sessions.
Anyone with asthma, a heart condition or panic disorder should keep breath holds short and stop if symptoms appear.
Breathing as part of a path

Breath work will help in every lesson. The Sissy Academy begins each lesson with slow breathing, and files such as Sissy Hypnosis in Five Minutes give you a gentle practice. For deepening after the breath settles, see how to go deeper in trance, or compare techniques in hypnosis vs meditation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best breathing technique for hypnosis?
A long exhale, breathing in for four counts and out for six to eight. It is simple, calming and works in any position. Box breathing and breath counting are good alternatives for a racing mind.
How long should I breathe before a hypnosis file?
Three minutes is enough for most people. Longer breath work, five to ten minutes, can help on stressful days. You will notice your shoulders drop and your thoughts slow when it is working.
Should I breathe through my nose or mouth during hypnosis?
Breathe in through the nose and out through the nose or softly through slightly parted lips. After the first few minutes, let your breathing become natural and follow the voice.
Can breathing exercises replace an induction?
They can act as one for many people. A few minutes of slow breathing already moves you towards a relaxed state, and an induction deepens it. Use both for a stronger effect.
