How to Give a Command to a Submissive Man: Wording, Timing and Follow-Through
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-11-06 · 5 min read

Giving a command to a submissive man is a skill, and it is smaller than people expect. A good command is one clear sentence, said calmly, with a pause afterwards. It has no apology in it and no explanation attached. What makes it work is not force but clarity: he knows exactly what you want, and he knows you will notice whether he does it.
Commands only belong in a dynamic you have both agreed to. Talk about what is welcome first, using how to start a femdom relationship or the femdom contract template as a guide. Then use this page for the wording. For ready-made lines, the femdom commands list has plenty.
The anatomy of a good command
A strong command has four parts.
- A verb. "Kneel." "Bring." "Wait." "Tell." Start with the action.
- A target or detail. "Bring me the blue cushion." "Wait by the door."
- A limit, when needed. "For five minutes." "Until I say."
- A silence. Stop talking. The pause is where obedience happens.
Compare "Maybe you could go and get the cushion if you don't mind" with "Bring me the blue cushion." The second is shorter, easier to follow and easier for him to enjoy.
Wording that works

- Use the imperative: "Sit." not "I'd like you to sit."
- Use names or a title if you have agreed on them: "Come here, boy" only if it is welcome.
- Use plain words. Complicated sentences hide the order.
- Use present tense and certain language: "You will", not "I hope you will."
- Keep to one command at a time until he is used to your rhythm.
Words to avoid: "maybe", "perhaps", "if you want", "would you mind" and "okay?" at the end. They turn commands into requests. You can be gentle in tone without softening the structure; see dominant woman voice tips.
Timing
When you give a command matters as much as how.
- At a natural break. Not while he is mid-sentence or busy with something else, unless interruption is the point.
- With eye contact. Look at him first, say it, hold the look for a second.
- After a pause. A short silence before the command gives it weight.
- Give him time. Let him respond before you add anything. Counting to five silently feels long, and it works.
Examples by level

Beginner (gentle, everyday):
- "Put your phone away and look at me."
- "Pour me a glass of water."
- "Sit here, next to me."
Intermediate (structured):
- "Tell me how your day went, in order, and don't leave anything out."
- "Wait in the hall until I call you."
- "Stand with your hands behind your back until I say."
Advanced (within agreed scenes):
- "Report to me at eight. Be dressed as we discussed."
- "You will not touch yourself until I give permission."
- "Write the lines we agreed on and read them to me tonight."
Pick what fits your limits, not the most intense option.
What to do if he hesitates
Hesitation can mean several things.
- Uncertainty. He did not understand. Repeat once, more simply.
- Nerves. He is excited or shy. Give him a moment, then say, "I asked you to..."
- A limit. The command is something he is not comfortable with. Take it seriously and ask quietly.
- Testing. Some submissive men enjoy testing. Respond calmly, with the agreed consequence, not anger.
Never push through a safeword, and never repeat a command in a louder voice. Calm repetition is stronger.
Acknowledging obedience

A command without acknowledgement feels empty. When he follows it, respond:
- "Good."
- "Exactly right."
- "Thank you. That was well done."
A small nod or a touch on the shoulder can say the same. This is the reward loop that makes people want to keep obeying. Praise kink explained shows why it matters, and femdom reward ideas gives more.
When he gets it wrong
Be calm and specific. "That is not what I asked for. Try again." If a consequence has been agreed, apply it without lecturing. Then move on and return to warmth. A correction should take less than a minute.
Commands in text and by phone

The same rules apply in messages. "Send me a photo of your finished chores by six." has the same shape as spoken commands. Avoid emojis that soften the tone if you want a firm feel, and keep to one instruction per message. Femdom phone call script provides practice lines.
Building up
- Start with two or three small commands per day for a week.
- Add one slightly harder command in a scene.
- After each, ask how it felt.
- Adjust the wording and the difficulty.
Over a month you will find your own style. Some dominants are brisk, some slow and silky. Both work if they are consistent and clear.
Safety and consent
Every command rests on consent. Know his limits, keep a safeword active and do not command anything harmful or humiliating beyond what he agreed to. If he says stop, you stop and check in. That reliability is what makes commands feel safe to obey.
Common mistakes new dominants make
- Explaining too much. Three sentences of reasoning after "Kneel" dissolve the order. Say it, wait, and keep the reasons for the negotiation stage.
- Apologising afterwards. "Sorry, I know that was a lot" tells him the command was a burden. Say "thank you" instead.
- Commanding from nerves. If you are anxious, breathe and slow down before you speak. A shaky command is still fine, but a rushed one is hard to follow.
- Choosing commands to impress. Pick ones that suit the mood of the evening and his limits, not the most dramatic option you can think of.
- Forgetting to look at him. Commands land when you see how they land. Watch his face, breathing and posture, and adjust.
A five-minute practice
Alone, say five commands aloud to an empty chair: slow, level, with a pause after each. Record it once and listen for softeners and rushing. Then say them again, a little slower. This takes five minutes and does more than reading about it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I give a command to a submissive man?
Use one short, specific instruction in a calm voice, with eye contact and a pause afterwards. Avoid softeners such as maybe or would you mind, and acknowledge him when he obeys.
What if he doesn't obey?
Stay calm. Repeat once more simply, check whether he understood or has a limit, and use the agreed consequence if it was testing. Never raise your voice or ignore a safeword.
Should I explain my commands?
Not in the moment. Explain rules and expectations when you negotiate. In play, a command should be short and complete.
How many commands should I give at once?
One at a time at first. Stacking orders makes them hard to follow and weakens the effect. Add complexity as he becomes used to your style.
