How to Hide an Adam's Apple: Necklines, Scarves and Contouring
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-19 · 3 min read

The Adam's apple is the cartilage at the front of the throat, and its size varies a lot between people. You cannot remove it with clothing, but you can make it far less noticeable. Here is what works, in the order I would try it.
Neckline first
The right neckline is the fastest fix because it changes what the eye sees first.
- Crew, boat and high round necks cover the area completely and suit casual wear.
- Turtleneck or mock neck hides the whole throat. It also helps with a broad neck.
- Deep V or scoop necks lead the eye downward and make the throat look like part of a long line. They work best with a necklace.
- Avoid: a narrow collar or tight crew that sits right under the cartilage and pushes it forward.
Scarves and chokers

A scarf is a feminine accessory that covers the throat in a natural way.
- Lightweight silk or cotton: fold it into a triangle and tie loosely, with the knot to the side.
- Infinity or loop scarf: two loops sit above the collarbone and cover the area. Good in cool weather.
- Velvet or fabric choker: a 2-3 cm band sits over the lower neck and breaks up the shadow. Place it just above or around the apple, not at the narrowest point of the neck.
- Statement necklace: a collar-style piece with beads or a pendant brings attention to the chest.
Contouring and shadow
Cartilage shows because light hits it and casts a shadow below it. Makeup can flatten that.
- Apply a matte bronzer or contour shade slightly deeper than your neck colour on the sides of the apple and a thin shadow just below it.
- Dab a lighter concealer on the hollow of the throat, directly under the shadow, to reduce the contrast.
- Blend with a damp sponge until there is no visible line.
- Set with a translucent powder so it does not transfer to the collar.
Match the neck to your face foundation. A white face on a darker neck is more noticeable than any cartilage. The foundation guide explains undertones and the contouring guide covers the face.
Posture and angles

A slightly lowered chin tightens the skin over the throat and shortens the neck's profile. Do not tuck it to your chest like a turtle; imagine a book resting on the top of your head and let the chin float down a centimetre. In photos, tilt the head a little to one side and shoot from just above eye level. Straight-on from below is the angle that shows the apple.
Hair, wigs and jewellery also help:
- Hair past the shoulders frames the neck and covers the sides. A bob can work if it falls around the jaw.
- Collarbone-length necklaces with a drop pendant pull the eye down.
- Large earrings draw the eye upward and outward. See clip-on earrings for men.
What not to do, and a daily routine
- Do not use tape or bandages on the throat to "flatten" it. They restrict breathing and do not work.
- Do not cover it with heavy foundation that cracks when you speak.
- Do not obsess. Cisgender women have visible Adam's apples too, and most people never look at yours.
A ten-minute routine before you head out keeps the result repeatable:
- Moisturise the neck and let it absorb for two minutes, so powder does not cling in patches.
- Apply foundation down the neck to the collarbone, not just to the jaw line.
- Add the contour on both sides of the cartilage with a small fluffy brush, using light strokes.
- Dab concealer in the hollow, blend, and set with powder.
- Check in daylight, or beside a window, from the side as well as the front. Artificial light flatters more than the street does.
- Choose the scarf or necklace last, because it should look like an accessory and not a cover-up.
If you wear a wig with fringe and length at the sides, you also gain a frame that narrows the lower face, which makes the throat seem shorter. Keep a small mirror and a brush in your bag for quick touch-ups after a coffee or a rainy walk, since heat and humidity are what lift contour from the skin. Practise at home on a quiet evening until the whole thing takes you under ten minutes and feels automatic.
Voice and confidence

The Adam's apple draws the eye mostly when you stare back at the person in a panic. Relaxed breathing, a gentle voice and soft hand movement make it a minor detail. Sissy Voice Training Hypnosis: Say It Softer practises a lighter, lower-effort delivery, and the feminine voice training guide gives daily exercises. The Sissy Academy path puts these skills in sequence.
Frequently asked questions
Can you hide an Adam's apple with clothes?
Mostly yes. High necks, scarves, chokers and loose collars cover it, and deep V necklines distract from it. Add a soft contour and a lowered chin for the best effect.
Does makeup help hide an Adam's apple?
Yes. A matte contour shade on the sides and below, with concealer on the hollow beneath, reduces the shadow that makes the cartilage visible. Blend well and match your neck to your face.
Is a choker good for hiding an Adam's apple?
A wide fabric or velvet choker works well, as long as it sits in the lower neck. A thin chain at the narrowest point can emphasise the cartilage instead.
Can you shave down an Adam's apple?
There is a surgical procedure, but it is a medical decision made with a surgeon. For dress-up and everyday crossdressing, styling and posture are enough.
