Get up.
I mean it. This one does not work lying down.
Go and stand in front of a mirror, shut the door behind you, and come back when you are there.
I will wait.
Good girl.
Now turn the main light off if there is a smaller one. Low is better than bright for this. Not dark. Just low.
Stand square to the glass.
Arms at your sides. Not folded. Folded is armour and we are not using armour tonight.
Now look.
Not at your hair. Not at the thing you always check. Not at the flaw you go to first, and you do have one, and you went to it about a second ago.
Look at the whole of you.
Stay.
Here is what this session is not. It is not a transformation. Nothing in that glass is going to change tonight. You will look exactly like you look.
Same face. Same shoulders. Same tired eyes at whatever hour this is.
Every other mirror file you have found does the soft dissolve thing, where you watch yourself become something.
I am not doing that, because you already know it is not true, and a session you know is lying has no power in it.
What we are working on instead is the gap.
There is a person doing the looking. And there is a person being looked at.
And for years you have not let those two be in the same room without one of them flinching.
Tonight neither one flinches. That is the whole exercise.
It is harder than it sounds. It takes about four minutes.
The rest of what I make is at ariawilde.com. Three dollars a month.
Now. Back to the glass.
Breathe in.
And out, longer.
Again. In.
Out.
Keep your eyes where they are.
You will want to look away in a moment. Everyone does, around now. Do not.
Breathe.
Notice what your face is doing. It is arranging itself. It always does that when it is watched, even by you.
Let it stop.
Let your jaw loosen.
Let your shoulders drop.
Let your face be whatever it is when nobody is looking at it.
That is harder than it sounds too, because somebody is looking at it. You are.
Stay.
Good girl.
Now, something strange, and I want you to do it exactly.
Stop thinking of that as you for a minute.
It is a person. In a room. At night. Being looked at.
Look at her that way.
Not to pretend. Just to see what happens when you drop the word you normally use.
Look at her.
Notice she is tired.
Notice she has been carrying something for a long time and has got very good at the carrying.
Notice nobody has looked at her properly in years, including you.
Especially you.
Stay with her.
Breathe in.
And out.
Notice how uncomfortable this is.
That is worth saying out loud, because most sessions pretend everything is easy.
This is not easy. Standing still and being looked at is one of the harder things a person can do, and you have spent years arranging your life so it does not happen.
Stay anyway.
Breathe.
The discomfort peaks at about ninety seconds and then it goes. Wait it out.
Keep your eyes where they are.
Good girl.
Now say something to her. Out loud. To the glass.
I see you.
Say it.
I see you.
Again.
I see you.
Notice what that did. Something moved. It always does on the second one.
Again.
I see you.
Good girl.
Now something harder.
Say her name for what she is.
You are a sissy.
To the glass. Out loud. Looking at her while you say it.
Say it.
You are a sissy.
Again.
You are a sissy.
Do not look away. That is the whole thing. Stay looking while it is true.
Again.
You are a sissy.
Notice she did not argue.
She never has. That was always you, standing outside, doing the arguing on her behalf.
Say it again.
You are a sissy.
Again.
You are a sissy.
Good girl.
Now I want you to notice how long you have been at this.
Not tonight. In general.
She has been in every mirror you have ever stood in front of.
The one in the house you grew up in.
Every bathroom in every flat since.
Shop windows. Phone screens. The dark glass of a train at night.
She was in all of them, and every single time, you did the same thing.
You checked the flaw and you left.
Say it to her.
I always looked away.
Again.
I always looked away.
Notice that is not an apology. It is just true.
Again.
I always looked away.
And notice she is not angry about it.
She has been extremely patient. More patient than you would have been.
Look at her.
Breathe in.
And out.
Now say the thing that goes with it.
I am not looking away tonight.
Say it.
I am not looking away tonight.
Again.
I am not looking away tonight.
Good girl.
Stay.
Now watch her face while you say the next one, because this is the one that changes something.
You have been waiting a long time.
Say it.
You have been waiting a long time.
Again.
You have been waiting a long time.
Stay looking.
Breathe in.
And out.
Now close the gap.
This is the part that matters, so do not rush it.
Up to now you have been talking to her. Somebody else. A person in a room.
That was useful. It got you looking.
But it is a trick, and I am going to take it away now.
There is no her. There never was.
There is one person in this room and she is standing in your shoes.
Stop saying you to her. Start saying I.
Say it.
I am a sissy.
Looking at her. At yourself. Same person. Say it.
I am a sissy.
Again.
I am a sissy.
Feel how different that is from saying it with your eyes shut in the dark.
Anyone can accept a thing in the dark. Doing it with the lights on and your own face in front of you is a completely different act.
Again.
I am a sissy.
Again.
I am a sissy.
Good girl.
Everything I make is at ariawilde.com. Three dollars a month.
Now say the whole thing to her. To yourself. Everything at once.
I am a sissy, I have always been one, and I am looking straight at myself while I say it.
Take your time.
Say it.
Again.
I am a sissy, I have always been one, and I am looking straight at myself while I say it.
Notice your voice was steadier the second time.
It always is. That is not courage arriving. That is just the sentence losing its charge.
One more.
I am a sissy, I have always been one, and I am looking straight at myself while I say it.
Stay there. Do not rush this part.
Breathe.
In.
And out.
Look at her and notice something has gone out of her face. The bracing. It is not there anymore.
Look at her mouth. It is not set the way it usually is.
Look at the space between her eyebrows. Smooth.
Look at her shoulders. They came down at some point and you did not notice when.
That is what four minutes of not arguing does to a body.
She looks younger without it. People always do.
That is what she looks like when she is not being argued with.
Remember that face. It is yours and you almost never get to see it.
Say it once more.
I am a sissy.
Good girl.
Now something soft before you go.
Still looking, let one small want be in the room with you.
Not a plan. Not an act. Just the plain wish to be pretty. To wear something delicate. To have somebody look at her the way you are looking at her now.
You are allowed to want that in front of a mirror with the lights on.
That is all that wanting ever was. It never needed the dark.
Let it be there a moment.
Breathe in.
And out.
Good girl.
One small thing, for tomorrow.
At some point you will pass a mirror without meaning to. A shop window. A car door. The dark side of a screen.
When you do, do not do the thing you always do. Do not check the flaw and move on.
Look at her for one second longer than you meant to.
One second. That is all.
She will take it.
That is the practice. A second at a time, in daylight, until being looked at stops being a thing you survive.
Now you can look away.
Notice you did not want to.
That is new.
If you got to the end of this standing in an actual bathroom with the light low, leave me a comment and say mirror. I want to know how many of you actually got up.
The rest is at ariawilde.com.
Turn the light off when you go.
She will still be there tomorrow, and she is not going anywhere, and neither are you.
Sleep well.
