Strap-On Dildo Cleaning and Storage: Material by Material, Drying and When to Replace

By · updated 2026-11-07 · 3 min read

strap on dildo cleaning and storage
Clean a strap-on dildo after every use with warm water and mild unscented soap or a toy cleaner, dry it fully, wash the harness separately, and store each piece apart in a breathable bag. Replace toys that become sticky, cracked or smelly.

A toy that is cleaned and stored properly lasts years and stays safe to use. The routine is short, but the details change by material. Here is what to do for each part of a strap-on set.

Know your material

MaterialCleaningNotes
Body-safe siliconeWarm water and mild soap; may be boiled briefly if the maker allows itUse water-based lubricant only with silicone-on-silicone
TPE or similarWarm water and mild soap; do not boilPorous, so cleaning must be thorough; use a condom to ease cleaning
Glass or steelWarm water and soap; dishwasher safe in some casesCheck for chips before use
Harness fabricHand wash gentlyDo not put leather in water

When in doubt, check the maker's care instructions. The detailed guide in how to clean a strap-on covers the basics; this page adds storage and replacement.

After every use

After every use, Aria Wilde
  1. Rinse in warm water straight away, before lubricant dries.
  2. Wash with mild unscented soap or a cleaner made for toys.
  3. Rinse well; soap residue irritates skin.
  4. Dry completely with a clean towel and then air dry.
  5. If the toy was used on more than one person or area, wash again or use a condom next time; see condom on a strap-on.

Cleaning the harness

Fabric and nylon harnesses can usually be hand washed in cool water with mild detergent and air dried. Leather and vinyl harnesses need a damp cloth and a leather conditioner or vinyl-safe wipe. Metal rings should be wiped and dried to prevent rust. Take the O-ring out if you can; see strap-on O-ring sizes. Never put a harness in a hot dryer.

Drying properly

Drying properly, Aria Wilde

Moisture breeds bacteria and mould. Leave the toy on a towel for an hour, or until nothing feels damp. Dry the harness flat. A fully dry toy also stores better, since a damp surface can stick to others and attract lint.

Storing each piece

When to replace

When to replace, Aria Wilde

Replace a toy that:

Replace a harness with stretched straps, a broken buckle or fraying. Check strap-on keeps slipping if the cause is a loose strap.

Common cleaning mistakes

A quick weekly check keeps problems from building up. Run a thumb along the toy, smell it, and look at it in good light. Check buckles, stitching and O-ring welds on the harness. Small repairs, such as replacing a worn strap, are cheaper than replacing a whole set and prevent mid-scene failures.

Safe habits

Safe habits, Aria Wilde

Use a fresh condom for sharing toys or switching between areas. Don't use a toy that has been dropped on a dirty floor without washing. Keep a small cleaning kit (cloth, cleaner, pouch) beside your toys so cleanup is part of aftercare, as in pegging aftercare checklist for the giver. For more on how to use the toy, see how to use a strap-on for beginners and the Sissy Academy for ideas in context.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a silicone strap-on dildo?

Wash with warm water and mild unscented soap or toy cleaner, rinse well and dry completely. Many silicone toys can also be boiled briefly if the manufacturer allows it.

Can I put a strap-on harness in the washing machine?

Usually no. Hand wash fabric harnesses in cool water and air dry. Leather and vinyl need a damp cloth, not soaking.

Why does my silicone toy feel sticky?

Silicone toys that touch each other can react, or a toy may be degrading. Store them separately and replace one that stays sticky.

How should I store a strap-on?

Dry, in a breathable pouch, away from heat and from other toys. Keep the harness flat or loosely rolled.

When should I throw away a strap-on toy?

When it is cracked, sticky, smelly after cleaning, discoloured or damaged. Replace a harness with frayed straps or broken buckles.
