Bottom: meaning
Also: bottom (BDSM), bottoming, receiving partner

Bottom means the receiving end of a scene. Whatever is happening, whether it is bondage, spanking, a massage or a command, the bottom is the person it is happening to. The opposite role is top, the person who does it.
What bottom means
The word describes a position within a particular activity, not a permanent identity. Someone is a bottom when they are:
- Being tied by a rope partner.
- Receiving a spanking.
- Being led through a sensation play scene.
- Following instructions in a roleplay.
Importantly, a bottom is often in control of the scene's limits. A good bottom communicates, negotiates and uses the safeword. In practice, many scenes are shaped as much by the bottom's wants as the top's skills.
Bottom vs submissive

Though people mix them up, these are different:
| Bottom | Sub | |
|---|---|---|
| Describes | Role in a scene | Psychology or relationship role |
| Applies to | Any receiver | Someone who enjoys surrendering control |
| Control | Often retains limits | Gives control by agreement |
| Example | A dominant woman who enjoys being flogged | A man who obeys his wife's rules every day |
You can be a submissive who tops, a dominant who bottoms, or a switch. The submissive vs bottom guide covers the overlap in detail. The reverse combination, a dominant bottom, is common in sensation play: the receiving person still sets terms.
Types of bottom
- Pain bottom / masochist. Enjoys intense sensation.
- Rope bottom. Enjoys being tied, sometimes called a rope bunny. See rope top.
- Service bottom. Enjoys being directed in tasks. See service sub.
- Power bottom. Takes charge from the receiving position.
- Brat. Bottoms who provoke the top to get a reaction.
The gay slang sense

In gay male slang, a bottom is the receptive partner in anal sex, the opposite of a top. The BDSM and gay uses overlap in vocabulary but not in meaning, and context makes it clear.
How to be a good bottom
- Know your limits. Make a yes/no/maybe list.
- Be honest in negotiation. Mention health, injuries and triggers.
- Speak up in the scene. Use traffic-light words, not heroic silence.
- Take care of yourself afterwards. Aftercare is for the bottom as well as the top.
- Know about sub drop. An emotional low a day or two later is common, and it passes.
A bottom who is passive, silent and unreadable is harder to play with safely.
Bottom in audio
Audio places you in the bottom's seat by default: the voice acts, you receive. It is one of the easiest ways to explore what kinds of attention and control you like. Sissy Hypno Obedience Training and Sissy Hypno Good Girl Conditioning show two different flavours, strict and praising, from the receiving side.
Examples in a sentence
- She's a switch but tonight she's the bottom.
- Being a bottom doesn't mean being a pushover.
- He's a rope bottom who loves long, slow ties.
- In the scene negotiation, the bottom listed her limits first.
Frequently asked questions
What does bottom mean in BDSM?
A bottom is the person who receives the action in a scene: tied, spanked, directed or teased. It is a role in the scene, not an identity, and it is separate from being submissive.
Is a bottom the same as a submissive?
No. A bottom describes who receives the action. A submissive describes a wish to surrender control. A dominant can bottom for sensation, and a submissive can top, since the roles are independent.
What is the difference between a top and a bottom?
A top performs the action in a scene; a bottom receives it. The top is responsible for technique and safety, and the bottom is responsible for communicating limits and sensations. Both share responsibility for consent.
What does bottom mean in gay slang?
In gay slang, a bottom is the receptive partner in anal sex, the opposite of a top. That sense is related to the BDSM word but not identical, and context shows which one is meant.
