Top: meaning
Also: top (BDSM), topping, active partner

A top is the active partner. If a scene has someone doing and someone receiving, the top is the one doing. The word is about the scene, not the person: you can be a top for an hour and spend the rest of your week as a submissive.
What top means
Examples of topping:
- Tying a partner in rope (a rope top).
- Delivering a spanking or using an impact tool.
- Giving a massage with sensation play.
- Running a roleplay and directing what happens.
- Wearing a strap-on in a pegging scene.
The opposite role is bottom, the person receiving. Both are needed; neither is more important.
Top vs dominant
| Top | Dom | |
|---|---|---|
| Describes | Role in the scene | Psychology or relationship role |
| Lasts | The scene | Often ongoing |
| Control | Delivers the activity | Holds authority by agreement |
| Example | A sub tying her dominant partner | A wife who runs the household rules |
A dominant often tops, but not always. A submissive may top at someone else's request, for instance when a dominant asks to be given a massage. This is called a 'service top'. See service top. The dom page covers the dominance side.
What good topping involves
- Negotiation first. Ask about limits, health and wishes. Scene negotiation checklist.
- Skill. Learn the technique and the danger zones. Practise before using intensity.
- Attention. Watch breathing, colour, muscle tension and expression. Pause if something looks off.
- Pacing. Start gentle, build gradually, and be ready to slow or stop.
- Responsibility. The top is responsible for safety, even when the bottom is asking for more.
- Aftercare. Warmth, water, touch and conversation. Tops can drop too (see dom drop).
Good topping is mostly attention. A flawless technique with poor communication is worse than a clumsy one with careful listening.
Types of top

- Sadistic top. Enjoys causing agreed intense sensation. See sadist.
- Sensual top. Focused on touch and pleasure.
- Service top. Performs at the bottom's request, taking direction. See service top.
- Dominant top. Combines the role with authority and control.
- Switch. Plays both top and bottom.
The gay slang sense
In gay male slang, a top is the insertive partner during anal sex, the counterpart of a bottom. Same word, different community use, and context makes it obvious.
Topping from below

A bottom who steers the scene is topping from the bottom. That phrase is sometimes a criticism and sometimes simply an observation, depending on the negotiation.
Top in audio
In audio I am the top by default: I choose the scenes, the pace and the words, while you receive. That arrangement lets you try being a bottom without a partner in the room. Sissy Training: Do Nothing Until I Say is an example of pure direction, and Sissy Hypnosis for Denial shows control at a gentler level.
Examples in a sentence
- She prefers to top, but only with people she trusts.
- Topping is about attention more than force.
- A top needs to watch the bottom's breathing and colour.
- He's a submissive in his relationship but likes to top in rope scenes.
