Crossdresser: meaning
Also: crossdressing, CD, cross-dresser, transvestite (dated)

Crossdresser means someone who wears clothes usually associated with another gender, and in everyday use it nearly always means a man in women's clothing: lingerie, dresses, heels, sometimes a full look with wig and makeup. It names something a person does, not who they are. A crossdresser might dress once a month in private or every evening at home, and still live as a man the rest of the time.
Where the word comes from
The older clinical word was transvestite, coined in 1910 from Latin for across and dressed. It picked up medical and judgmental baggage, so most people now prefer crossdresser or the shorthand CD. In online profiles you will see CD next to age and location, and CDs used as a community plural.
Crossdresser vs drag queen vs trans woman
| Word | What it is |
|---|---|
| Crossdresser | Wears another gender's clothing, usually privately, for personal reasons |
| Drag queen | A performer creating an exaggerated feminine character for an audience |
| Trans woman | A woman who was assigned male at birth; an identity, not a wardrobe choice |
Drag is theater: big wigs, stage makeup, a persona with a name and a show. Crossdressing is usually quiet and personal. Being trans is not about clothes at all; a trans woman is a woman whether she is in jeans or a gown. Some people crossdress for years before realizing they are trans, many never do, and both paths are valid.
Why people crossdress
Reasons vary widely:
- Comfort and calm: soft fabrics and a different self-image can be deeply relaxing.
- Expression: enjoying a side of yourself everyday life does not show.
- Arousal: for some, lingerie or the transformation itself is erotic.
- Kink: crossdressing can be one part of feminization, sissy play or forced feminization.
Crossdresser vs sissy vs femboy

A crossdresser needs no dominant and no power exchange; the clothes are the point. A sissy usually wears them because someone told him to, and the submission matters as much as the lace. A femboy tends to present femininely as an everyday style. These overlap, but not every crossdresser is a sissy, and many would not use that word.
Crossdressing in relationships
Many crossdressers keep it private for years, then face the question of telling a partner. Partners react in every possible way: some are uncomfortable, many are curious, and a surprising number end up enjoying helping with makeup, choosing outfits or turning it into a shared game. It usually goes best when it is shared calmly, at a chosen moment, as something you enjoy rather than a confession of wrongdoing. Discretion while you decide is completely reasonable, and keeping clothes stored neatly and privately is part of most beginners' routines.
Crossdressing in audio and hypnosis

Audio helps with the hardest part for many beginners: nerves. Sissy Hypnosis for Getting Dressed walks you through putting on something feminine calmly and slowly. If you are buying things and never wearing them, Why You Keep Buying Things You Never Wear is for you. For practical steps, see crossdressing for beginners and dressing feminine at home.

Frequently asked questions
Is a crossdresser the same as a transvestite?
They describe the same activity, but transvestite is an older clinical term many people now find dated or stigmatizing. Crossdresser, or simply CD, is the more common and respectful word today. A few older community members still use transvestite for themselves, which is their call.
Are crossdressers gay?
Most crossdressers who wear women's clothing are heterosexual men, according to community surveys and clinical research. Crossdressing is about clothing and expression, not attraction. Gay, bisexual and straight crossdressers all exist, and partners of crossdressers are often women.
Is crossdressing a kink?
Sometimes. For some people crossdressing is erotic or part of feminization and sissy play. For others it is purely about comfort, relaxation or expression with no sexual element. Both are common. The word itself only describes wearing the clothes, not why someone does it.
