Mistress: meaning
Also: Mistress (title), Miss, my Mistress, Ma'am

Outside kink, 'mistress' usually means a woman having an affair with a married man, or historically the woman in charge of a household, a school or servants. In BDSM it returns to that older sense of authority: Mistress is what you call the woman who owns your obedience.
What Mistress means in kink
Mistress is a title. A sub uses it when speaking to or about their domme: 'Yes, Mistress', 'Mistress said I may not', 'I belong to Mistress Aria'. It does three jobs at once:
- Marks the power exchange: every time the word is said, both people feel the dynamic.
- Shows respect: like 'Sir' in the military, it's a reminder of rank.
- Works as a trigger: for many subs, saying it shifts them into a submissive headspace.
It's capitalised when used as a title, the same way you'd capitalise Doctor or Captain.
When subs use the title

Mistress is usually part of protocol. Common rules:
- Every answer ends in 'Mistress' during scenes.
- The sub must ask permission before using it with a new domme.
- Forgetting it earns a consequence, which brats forget on purpose.
- In public, a discreet substitute like 'Miss' or her first name.
- Some dommes reserve it for long-term subs; newcomers use 'Ma'am'.
Using 'Mistress' with a domme you've just met online, without asking, is considered presumptuous in most communities.
Mistress vs Goddess and other titles
| Title | Feel | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| Mistress | Authority, ownership, rules | Classic femdom, obedience dynamics |
| Goddess | Worship, devotion, awe | Worship, findom, body adoration |
| Ma'am / Miss | Polite, softer | New subs, public settings |
| Queen | Regal, status | Lighter or playful dynamics |
| Domina | Formal, old-fashioned | Strict pro-domme style |
A domme picks the title that fits her style. Some use different titles for different subs or moods.
Mistress vs dominatrix

A dominatrix is often a professional; Mistress is how a sub addresses her. A professional dominatrix's clients typically call her Mistress during sessions, and a lifestyle domme's partner may call her Mistress at home. The title describes the relationship, not the job.
Mistress in femdom audio
In femdom ASMR and hypnosis, the title is used constantly because repetition is the point. You'll be asked to whisper 'yes, Mistress' back, sometimes as a mantra or a conditioned response. Over a few sessions the word itself starts to relax and arouse. The guide to hypnosis mantras covers why repeating titles works so well, and sissy rules has typical title protocols.
Obedience Training builds the 'yes, Mistress' reflex step by step, and Hypno Lines turns it into a writing task.
Other senses of the word
For completeness: a 'mistress' in relationship slang is an affair partner; 'mistress of ceremonies' is a host; a 'headmistress' runs a school; and 'mistress' in older English meant a woman with control over something, as in 'mistress of her craft'.
Examples in a sentence
- Yes, Mistress. It won't happen again, Mistress.
- I asked permission before calling her Mistress the first time.
- In public I just call her Miss, but we both know.
- Forgetting to say Mistress cost me ten minutes in the corner.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to call someone Mistress?
In kink, calling a woman Mistress acknowledges her as your dominant and you as her submissive. It's an honorific that reinforces the power exchange, much like 'Sir' or 'Ma'am', and it usually comes with permission and rules about when to use it.
What is the difference between Mistress and Goddess?
Mistress emphasises authority, ownership and rules. Goddess emphasises worship, devotion and admiration. Dommes choose whichever fits their style; worship-heavy or findom dynamics lean toward Goddess, obedience and discipline dynamics toward Mistress. Ask your domme which title she prefers.
Should I call a domme Mistress straight away?
Usually not. Many dommes see the title as something earned or granted. Use 'Ma'am' or her name and ask what she prefers. Assuming the title on first contact often comes across as entitled. Asking first is itself a good show of respect.
Is Mistress always capitalised?
When used as a title or form of address, yes: 'Yes, Mistress', 'Mistress Aria'. In general description, 'she is his mistress' can be lowercase. Many dommes also ask for capitalisation in texts as a sign of respect.
