NoFap: meaning
Also: no fap, nofapper, No Nut November, NNN, reboot

NoFap means not masturbating. 'Fap' is old internet slang for masturbation, imitating the sound, so 'no fap' is a pledge to stop, usually along with porn. It began as an online challenge and became a movement with its own vocabulary, streak counters and strong opinions. It is easy to confuse with erotic denial, but the goals are almost opposite.
What nofap means
In practice, 'doing NoFap' means one of:
- Hard mode: no porn, no masturbation, no orgasm at all.
- Normal mode: no porn and no masturbation, but sex with a partner allowed.
- Porn-free only: quitting porn but keeping masturbation.
Participants count their streak in days and call the start of a new attempt a 'reset'. A relapse is a slip; 'flatline' describes a period of very low libido that some report in the early weeks.
Where it came from

The word 'fap' dates back to early-2000s webcomics and forums. In 2011 a Reddit community called NoFap was created after users discussed a study on abstinence and testosterone, and it grew into a large forum for people trying to quit porn. The yearly No Nut November challenge, a joke version where people try to last the whole month, spread in the late 2010s and made the idea mainstream.
NoFap vs denial play
| NoFap | orgasm denial | |
|---|---|---|
| goal | quitting a habit, self-improvement | erotic intensity, submission |
| arousal | avoided | encouraged |
| control | yourself | often a partner or keyholder |
| typical tool | streak app | chastity cage, audio |
The confusion happens because both involve not finishing. But a NoFap participant avoids arousal, while someone in denial play is deliberately kept aroused. Locktober is the clearest example of the difference: same month-long structure, opposite intent.
Claims and criticism

NoFap communities report better focus, confidence and motivation. Some of that is real: breaking a compulsive habit frees up time and attention. Other claims, like dramatic testosterone gains or superpowers, are not supported by research. Critics also point out that framing masturbation as harmful can create unnecessary shame. Sexual health experts generally say occasional masturbation is healthy, and the useful question is whether porn or habits are causing a problem for you specifically.
Where audio fits
If you came to NoFap through a sense that porn had become mindless, structured audio sits at the other end of the spectrum: slow, guided, intentional. Some people who try NoFap discover they actually enjoy the waiting more than the abstaining, and that is where semen retention and denial play begin. My denial training guide explains how deliberate denial works, and Sissy Hypnosis for Learning to Wait treats patience as pleasure.

Frequently asked questions
What does fap mean?
Fap is internet slang for masturbating, originally an onomatopoeia for the sound, popularised by early-2000s webcomics and forums. 'Fapping' means masturbating, and NoFap means abstaining. It is informal and mostly used online, often humorously, and rarely heard in face-to-face conversation.
Does NoFap actually work?
It depends on the goal. For people whose porn use feels compulsive, a break can genuinely improve focus, sleep and relationships. Claims of large testosterone boosts or dramatic physical changes are not supported by research. Many of the benefits come from breaking a habit rather than from abstinence itself.
Is NoFap the same as No Nut November?
No Nut November is a one-month challenge to avoid orgasm during November, often treated as a joke. NoFap is a broader movement and community focused on quitting masturbation and porn long-term. No Nut November popularised the idea, but NoFap is more serious and ongoing.
