Suggestibility: meaning
Also: hypnotic suggestibility, hypnotizability, susceptibility to hypnosis

Suggestibility is the word hypnosis researchers and hypnotists use for the trait that decides how easily you respond to suggestions. It is not a flaw, a weakness or a sign of intelligence. It is a normal human variable, like how vividly you daydream or how easily you get absorbed in a film.
What suggestibility means
When I say "your hand feels heavy" and you actually feel heaviness, you have responded to a suggestion. How strongly and how reliably you do that is your suggestibility. High-suggestibility people tend to produce vivid sensations quickly, while others respond more subtly or need longer relaxation first. Most people sit in the middle.
What shapes it

- Absorption. People who lose themselves in books, music or daydreams usually respond well.
- Motivation and expectation. Wanting to experience trance and believing it can happen both help.
- Comfort and trust. A voice you find calming and a space you feel safe in make responding easier.
- Practice. Response often improves with repetition. The first session is rarely the deepest.
- Mood and fatigue. Being tired or distracted shifts results either way: tiredness helps with relaxation, distraction hurts focus.
How it is tested
Researchers use standard scales that run a person through a series of short suggestions, such as hand levitation, arm heaviness and eye closure, and count how many produce a response. At home, simple tests are informal: the eye-fixation drill, an imagined lemon, or a hand-and-magnets exercise. None of them are verdicts; they are a way of noticing what you respond to. For a gentle look at what to expect, read what hypnosis feels like.
Myths worth dropping

You do not lose control, and being suggestible does not mean being gullible. A hypnotized person refuses suggestions that conflict with their values. Another myth: "I can't be hypnotized." Almost everyone can respond to some extent, and the guide on why you can't get hypnotized covers the usual obstacles. And the reverse myth: highly suggestible people are not helpless; they simply respond vividly.
Suggestibility and conditioning
In sessions that build triggers and post-hypnotic suggestions, suggestibility affects how fast an anchor takes. Repetition raises it: the same cue, paired with the same relaxed state, feels more automatic each time. That is the idea behind conditioning.
A simple self-check
Try this: hold your arms out in front of you, close your eyes and imagine one hand holding a heavy book and the other tied to a helium balloon. After a minute, open your eyes. If the hands have moved apart, your imagination is influencing your body, which is the heart of suggestibility. If nothing happened, repeat it calmly another day; results fluctuate with mood. Treat the result as information about your style, not a score.
Raising your response
Choose a quiet time, use headphones, and let go of trying. A recording like the Start Here series is built for this. Listen regularly rather than waiting for a perfect session. Responsiveness is a skill that grows with use, and the person who relaxes most easily usually gets the most out of it.
Examples in a sentence
- Her suggestibility test showed she responds strongly to imagery.
- I used to think low suggestibility meant hypnosis wouldn't work for me.
- Suggestibility goes up when you're relaxed and expecting it to work.
Frequently asked questions
Is high suggestibility a bad thing?
No. It means you respond vividly to suggestion, which makes hypnosis more effective and imagination richer. It does not mean you can be made to do anything, because your values still filter what you accept.
Can you increase your suggestibility?
Yes, to a degree. Regular practice, better relaxation and a trusted voice all increase response. Treat it as a skill that develops over weeks rather than something you either have or lack.
How do I know if I'm suggestible?
Try a few simple exercises: imagine biting a lemon, or let your arm feel heavy. If you notice real sensations, you respond. Formal scales give a more rigorous picture, but informal signs are good enough for most listeners.
Does suggestibility mean I'm gullible?
No. Hypnotic suggestibility is about imagination and focus, not belief in claims. Many highly intelligent, skeptical people score high because they can absorb themselves easily.
