Yes Set: meaning
Also: yes ladder, agreement chain, yes-set pattern

A yes set is hypnosis borrowing from sales and conversation: get a person nodding, and the next thing you say meets less resistance. In a session, it softens the border between facts and suggestions.
Anatomy of a yes set
- Two to four undeniable truths. "You are listening. You are breathing. You are somewhere comfortable."
- A likely truth. "Some thoughts have already started to slow."
- The suggestion. "And you can let them slow further."
The listener nods internally through the first three, and the fourth rides along. It works best when the truths are about the listener's experience, which makes it a form of pacing and leading.
Examples
| Set | Suggestion at the end |
|---|---|
| You came here to relax. You pressed play. You are listening. | So you may as well let go. |
| Your eyes are on the screen. Your hands are resting. Your breath is moving. | And your eyelids can get heavy. |
| You've done this before. You enjoyed it. You want to enjoy it again. | So you can sink faster this time. |
Questions as yes sets
Questions work too. "Isn't it nice to stop for a moment? Don't you deserve ten quiet minutes? Wouldn't it feel good to drop?" Tag questions ("...isn't it?") pull a mental yes automatically. They are slightly more assertive, so I use them with listeners who already know my voice.
Why it works

Two things happen. First, agreement is a habit: after three yeses, a fourth feels natural and a no takes effort. Second, each true statement builds trust, which lowers the guard against the suggestion. It is the opening move of compounding and works inside conversational hypnosis.
When it backfires
- The statements aren't true. "You feel perfectly calm" to someone anxious is heard as false and breaks rapport.
- The set is too long. After six or seven, it feels like a technique rather than a conversation.
- The final suggestion is a leap. A yes set makes steps easier, not jumps.
In my audio

Sissy Hypnosis: Say Yes to Something Small is built around a literal yes set: tiny acceptances, each one a rung. Sissy Hypnosis: You Already Said Yes looks back at those yeses and asks you to notice you're already there. For writing your own, see hypnotic language patterns and how to write a hypnosis script.
Yes sets in everyday life
Sales scripts and surveys use the same ladder: "You want to save time? You want less hassle? Then this is for you." Spotting the pattern is a fair defence against it. In a hypnosis session the same structure is a courtesy, a way to walk someone gently from what they already know to something new. The ethical test is simple: does the final step serve the listener's own goal, or only the speaker's?
Examples in a sentence
- "Three easy yeses and then the real suggestion: classic yes set."
- "She ran a yes set on me: you're here, you're tired, you're listening, so sink."
- "The yes set at the start of the file got me nodding before I knew it."
Frequently asked questions
What is a yes set in hypnosis?
A sequence of statements or questions the listener will agree with, ending in the suggestion you want accepted. The early agreements create momentum and rapport, so the final suggestion meets less resistance. It is a basic tool of indirect hypnosis.
Is a yes set manipulation?
In a consensual hypnosis session it is a pacing technique, like building up before a main point in a story. Used to pressure someone outside such an agreement, the same pattern becomes manipulative. Knowing it helps you spot sales pitches that run on it.
How many yeses do you need?
Usually three to five. Fewer may not build enough momentum, and more than six can feel mechanical. Make every statement genuinely true for the listener, then add the suggestion as a short, natural next step.
