How to Choose a Lipstick Colour as a Crossdresser: Undertone, Finish and Occasion

By · updated 2026-11-06 · 3 min read

how to choose a lipstick colour as a crossdresser
Choose lipstick by undertone first: warm skin suits coral, peach and brick; cool skin suits berry, rose and blue-red; neutral skin suits both. Then pick the finish, such as satin for everyday and matte for evenings, and begin with a shade close to your natural lip.

Lipstick is often the first makeup crossdressers buy and the one that changes the face most. It is also the easiest to get wrong, because the colour that looks good in the tube may look different on your skin, and a shade that is too bold can draw attention for the wrong reasons. A quick method fixes that: find your undertone, pick a finish, and match the colour to the occasion. Everything below works for any skin tone.

Step 1: find your undertone

Undertone is the colour beneath the surface of your skin. It does not change with tanning. Three quick checks:

  1. Vein test. In daylight, look at the inside of your wrist. Green veins suggest a warm undertone, blue or purple suggest cool, a mix of both suggests neutral.
  2. Jewellery test. Gold usually flatters warm skin; silver flatters cool skin; both work on neutral.
  3. White paper test. Hold white paper beside your face. If your skin looks yellow or golden, it is warm; if pink or rosy, cool.

If the tests disagree, you are probably neutral, which is the most flexible group.

Step 2: shades by undertone

NeutralDusty rose, soft redClassic red, wineVery pale shades

Deeper skin tones can carry rich berries, plums, deep reds and warm browns that look washed out on lighter skin. Lighter skin tones usually look best in soft pinks, corals and clear reds.

Step 3: choose the finish

For first attempts, a satin lipstick one or two shades deeper than your natural lip colour gives a result that looks real instead of painted.

Step 4: match the shade to the occasion

Step 5: apply well

  1. Exfoliate the lips gently with a soft cloth and apply balm for five minutes.
  2. Blot the balm off.
  3. Outline the lips with a pencil close to the lipstick colour, going slightly inside your natural line if your lips are fuller than you want.
  4. Fill in with lipstick from the centre outwards.
  5. Blot with tissue, then reapply for staying power.

If you have facial hair, shave the upper lip closely and use foundation or concealer around the lip line before applying colour. See crossdressing foundation steps for beginners and how to get a close shave for makeup.

Frequently asked questions

What lipstick colour is best for a beginner crossdresser?

A satin lipstick in a soft rose, coral or nude one or two shades deeper than your natural lip. It looks natural and forgives small mistakes.

How do I know my undertone?

Check the veins on your wrist in daylight: green suggests warm, blue or purple suggests cool, a mix suggests neutral. The white paper test and jewellery test help confirm.

Does matte or satin look better?

Satin is more comfortable and forgiving for beginners. Matte lasts longer but needs well-prepared lips.

How do I make lipstick last?

Prep the lips, outline with a pencil, fill in, blot, and apply a second thin layer. Carry a small mirror and the lipstick for touch-ups.

Can I wear bold red as a beginner?

Yes, with preparation. Use a liner, keep the rest of the makeup simple and practise at home before going out.
