Silicone vs Foam Breast Forms: Which Should You Buy?
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-19 · 4 min read

Breast forms are the part of a first wardrobe that people either overthink or skip completely, and both mistakes show. A bra without a form does nothing; a form that is too heavy, too hot or the wrong shape gets taken off after an hour. Silicone and foam are the two common materials, and they suit different people and different days.
The quick comparison
| Silicone | Foam | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Heavy, close to real tissue | Very light |
| Realism | High: moves, sags and warms like skin | Medium: stays rigid, fixed shape |
| Heat | Holds warmth, can feel sweaty | Breathable, cooler |
| Care | Wash with mild soap, store in the case | Hand wash, air dry, replace sooner |
| Lifespan | Several years | Months to a year |
| Adhesives | Self-adhesive and strap options | Pocket in the bra, or tape |
| Use case | Regular wear, going out, photos | First trial, hot days, quick dressing |
| Budget level | Mid to high | Low |
Weight and how it feels

Weight is the biggest practical difference. A natural breast has mass, and silicone forms copy it: a medium pair weighs roughly 500 to 900 grams in total, and the dragging effect on your straps and shoulders is real. That weight is also what makes movement convincing, because the form swings slightly as you walk.
Foam weighs almost nothing. You will not feel it, but you also will not see any natural movement. Foam is excellent if you want to test the silhouette, wear a form for hours without discomfort or attend an event in warm weather.
If you are unsure, start with foam, wear it for two or three sessions and note whether you wanted the extra weight. That quickly answers the question without a big purchase.
Realism, shape and drape
Silicone forms come as teardrop, round, asymmetrical and full-cup shapes, and the better ones have a skin-like textured surface and a firmer base with a softer outer layer. Under a thin top they look right because the material compresses and rebounds as tissue does.
Foam is a cut piece with a uniform density. Under a tight shirt it can read as a lump, but under a lined bra or a loose knit it is perfectly convincing. A trick is to wear a padded bra with foam inserts in the pockets so the edges blend.
Sizing is shared across both: measure your chest under the bust line and add the form's projection to find your target cup. The breast forms guide has a chart, and the first bra guide shows how to fit a band so the forms sit where they should. Err smaller than you think; a modest cup looks more natural and is easier to dress around.
Heat, sweat and skin

Silicone insulates. In a warm room, or after thirty minutes of walking, the skin under the form gets hot and slightly damp. Tricks that help: wear a thin cotton camisole between skin and form, choose self-adhesive forms only for short periods, use talc-free powder on the back of the form and take breaks. Foam lets air through and is far kinder to sensitive skin.
Look for skin reactions to adhesive first. Test any tape on the inside of your forearm for twenty-four hours, and remove adhesive forms gently with warm water and a little oil. Redness that lasts more than a day is a signal to switch to a bra-pocket form.
Care, storage and lifespan
Silicone. Wash with lukewarm water and a mild soap, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Never use alcohol, oil-based creams or hot water, because they degrade the material. Store flat in the case, never folded or under weight, and keep it away from dark fabrics that can stain.
Foam. Hand wash gently, squeeze out water and air dry away from heat. Foam breaks down with sweat and washing, so expect to replace it after a few months of regular use.
A pair of silicone forms looked after properly will last years, which is why the higher initial cost often balances out for regular wearers.
Which to buy

- First experiment, trying at home. Foam, small to medium, in a padded bra pocket.
- Regular wear, wanting realism. Silicone teardrops in a skin tone close to yours.
- Hot climate or gym. Foam or a lightweight silicone "air" form.
- Photos and special occasions. Silicone, with a fitted bra.
- Both. Many people own a cheap foam pair for quick use and a silicone pair for the full look.
Once your forms arrive, practise putting them on and moving in them. Frequently asked questions
Are silicone or foam breast forms better?
Silicone is better for realism, weight and long-term wear. Foam is better for a first trial, hot weather and low maintenance. Many people own both.
How long do foam breast forms last?
With regular wear, foam forms usually last a few months to a year before they lose shape from sweat and washing. Silicone forms last several years with proper care.
Can you wear silicone breast forms all day?
Yes, but they hold heat. Wear a thin cotton layer underneath, take breaks in warm weather and clean the skin and form daily. Foam is more comfortable for very long wear.
What cup size should a beginner choose?
Start with a small to medium form, around an A to C cup depending on your frame. Smaller sizes look more natural and are easier to dress, and you can go up later.
