Binaural audio: meaning
Also: binaural recording, binaural ASMR, dummy head recording, 3D audio

Binaural audio is sound that is captured and played back as if you were hearing it with your own two ears. Direction, distance and movement are encoded into just two channels, so with headphones you sense a voice at the left shoulder or behind your head.
What binaural audio means
"Binaural" simply means "with two ears". The recording tries to preserve the cues the brain uses to locate sound: tiny delays between ears, volume differences and the way the outer ear filters frequencies.
Two common ways of making it:
- Dummy head: a model head with microphones in the ear canals. The creator speaks, taps and walks around it.
- In-ear mics: small mics worn in the recorder's own ears.
It can also be simulated in software, which is how "8D" or spatial audio tracks are produced; see 8D audio.
Binaural vs binaural beats

These two get confused all the time.
| Binaural audio | Binaural beats | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Recording technique | Two slightly different tones, one per ear |
| Content | Voices, taps, ambience | Pure tones, often with music |
| Effect | 3D, spatial realism | Claimed brainwave entrainment |
| Evidence | Well understood acoustics | Mixed, small studies |

Why ASMR creators use it
The spatial detail makes the listener feel someone is in the room. Whispers near one ear, slow movements around the head, a hand brushing the mic: all sound like contact. That proximity is what personal attention ASMR depends on, and it is behind the ear to ear style.
Binaural audio in hypnosis

In trance audio, binaural positioning adds immersion. Movement of the voice can steer attention, cues can be placed at one side, and a sound can drift away to suggest drifting deeper. I use it sparingly: too much panning is distracting, so most of my instructions stay in the centre. Sissy Hypnosis Anchored to a Sound and Deep Sissy Hypno are good examples of the subtle approach.
What you need to hear it
- Headphones. Speakers cannot deliver binaural cues.
- A reasonably neutral pair; extreme bass boost distorts the effect.
- A quiet place and a moderate volume.

Does everyone hear it?
Most people get at least a hint of 3D. The effect depends on your own ear shape and on how close the recording head is to yours. Some listeners hear the sound inside their head instead of outside it; this is normal.
Is it important for ASMR?
Not required. Plenty of excellent ASMR is plain stereo or mono. But if you want the "someone is near me" feeling, binaural recording is the strongest tool a creator has.
Examples in a sentence
- "This binaural recording makes it sound like she's walking around your chair."
- "Don't mix up binaural audio with binaural beats."
- "You need headphones for the binaural effect."
Frequently asked questions
What does binaural mean in ASMR?
It means the audio was recorded to mimic two-ear hearing, so sounds seem positioned in 3D around your head. ASMR creators use dummy-head mics to make whispers and taps appear very close to each ear.
Is binaural audio the same as binaural beats?
No. Binaural audio is a recording technique for spatial sound. Binaural beats are two slightly different pure tones, one per ear, said to induce a beating sensation in the brain. They sit in different categories, and the research support for beats is weaker.
Can I listen to binaural audio without headphones?
You can, but you lose the effect. Speakers mix left and right in the room, which wipes out the cues the brain needs for 3D positioning. For the full experience use headphones at a comfortable volume.
