En drab: meaning
Also: in drab, drab mode, boy mode, male mode

En drab is crossdresser slang for presenting as a man: jeans, work shirt, short hair, no makeup. It is the counterpart to en femme, and the pair let people say "which mode am I in?" in two words.
What en drab means
It marks the everyday, masculine-coded presentation. The word "drab" is deliberately unflattering: the joke is that male clothing is plain next to what the feminine self gets to wear. Said with affection, it is the same humour as calling a day job "the cover story".
You will hear it as a status ("Back en drab on Monday"), as a place ("my en drab wardrobe"), and as a description of photos or profiles ("en drab photo only").
Origin of the phrase

"En" is borrowed from the French pattern used in en femme, which gave crossdressers a ready-made opposite. "Drab" has meant dull-coloured and dreary in English for centuries. Some people explain the phrase as a backronym; the more likely story is simply that someone needed a word to pair with en femme and the pun was too good to skip. It circulated on crossdressing mailing lists and early forums and has stayed in use because nothing neater replaced it.
When people use it
- Planning: "Meet me at the hotel en drab, change upstairs."
- Privacy: couples and friends who know about the feminine side use it to agree when it is okay to talk about it.
- Online: profiles mark which photos show which mode.
- Transitions: the moment of changing back is sometimes called "going back to drab".
The switch is a real emotional event for many people. Changing back can bring a flat feeling similar to what some describe after a scene, which I cover for submissives in sub drop. Plan for it: have a snack, a shower and something warm to do afterwards.
En drab and feminization play

In a dynamic the dominant often controls which mode you are in. A mistress might set "en drab at work, en femme at home" as a rule, or require a hidden item under your suit as a bridge between the two. Wearing panties under clothes is the classic example, and keeping your sissy side private deals with the practical risks of the double life.
Some audio is written for exactly that switch. Hypnosis for When You Keep Hiding It is aimed at people who live mostly en drab and feel the gap, and Sissy Acceptance Without the Shame works on the guilt that often sits between the two modes.
En drab is not a judgement
Nobody in the community treats en drab as the "fake" side or en femme as the "real" one, though individuals feel both ways. For many people both are authentic parts of a single life. If the split starts to hurt, talking it through with a partner or a counsellor who knows gender and kink topics beats guessing alone.

Frequently asked questions
What does en drab mean in crossdressing?
It means appearing in ordinary male clothes and grooming, as opposed to en femme. People use it to separate their everyday life from the time they spend dressed as a woman, for instance when planning a meet-up, editing photos or explaining a household rule.
Is en drab an insult?
No. The word drab sounds negative, but the phrase is self-deprecating humour used by crossdressers about themselves. It simply names the plain, everyday mode and carries no judgement about men or masculinity.
Why do crossdressers talk about changing back?
Switching from femme to drab can feel abrupt: the clothes, voice and mindset all change at once. Some people feel a flat dip afterwards. A routine such as a shower, a drink and a calm activity softens it, and so does having a partner who understands.
