Hypnotee: meaning
Also: tee, hypnotised person, subject, hypnosis subject

Hypnotee is simply the word for the person on the receiving end of hypnosis. The hypnotist guides; the hypnotee goes into trance. It is the tidy counterpart to the word hypnotist, and in online communities it is almost always shortened to tee.
What hypnotee means
The role names exist because hypnosis is a collaboration with two parts. The hypnotee supplies attention, imagination and willingness. The hypnotist supplies structure, pacing and suggestions. Without a willing hypnotee, nothing happens, which is why many practitioners prefer to say the tee "goes into trance" rather than "is put under".
Tist and tee
| Short form | Long form | Role |
|---|---|---|
| tist | hypnotist | leads the session |
| tee | hypnotee | experiences the session |
| hypnodomme | hypnotic dominant | leads in a kink context, see hypnodomme |
| hypnosub | hypnotic submissive | tee in a kink context |
You will see the pairing "tist/tee" in forum posts, request threads and session reports. Some communities also write "tee" as a username for someone who loves being hypnotised, or "tist" for someone who enjoys leading.
Other words for the same role
- Subject. The older clinical and research term.
- Client. Used by hypnotherapists in a professional setting.
- Participant or volunteer. Used in stage and research settings.
- Listener. The natural word for audio, since there is no live tist.
What the hypnotee does

A good hypnotee:
- Agrees to the session and states limits beforehand.
- Gets comfortable and removes distractions.
- Follows instructions without forcing the effect. Effort gets in the way; allowing is what works.
- Uses a safeword or signal if something is wrong.
- Reports back honestly afterwards, as in a debrief.
Responsiveness varies. See hypnotizability test if you are curious how you compare, and why can't I get hypnotized if you suspect you are a poor subject. In practice, nearly everyone can enter a light trance.
Hypnotee in erotic hypnosis
In hypnokink, the tee is often the submissive in a power dynamic with the tist, though not always. Some people alternate roles. The relationship works best with negotiated limits, clear consent and an agreed emergence. How to run this with a partner is explored in tranceplay and in my guide on how to hypnotize your partner.
Hypnotee in audio

When you listen to a recording you are your own hypnotee, with a voice taking the tist's part. You still have the tee's responsibilities: pick a safe place, choose material you accept and wake up properly. Start with Sissy Hypnosis for Beginners, which gives plain instructions on posture and breathing for first-time listeners.
Is "tee" a status?
No. It is a role label. A tee keeps control throughout: they can open their eyes, stop the session or refuse a suggestion. Treating the tee as passive is both inaccurate and a bad habit.
Examples in a sentence
- "Looking for a tee to practise a new induction with."
- "The tist and the hypnotee agreed on limits first."
- "As a tee, I like deep, slow inductions."
Frequently asked questions
What does tee mean in hypnosis?
Tee is short for hypnotee, the person being hypnotised. Its partner term is tist, short for hypnotist. Both are community slang for the two roles in a session.
Is a hypnotee the same as a hypnosub?
Not exactly. A hypnotee is anyone being hypnotised. A hypnosub is a hypnotee who also takes a submissive role in a kink dynamic. All hypnosubs are hypnotees, but not every hypnotee is a sub.
Can anyone be a good hypnotee?
Most people can. Good tees are willing, relaxed, imaginative and comfortable following suggestions. Practice improves responsiveness, so a first attempt that feels light is a normal starting point.
