Hypnotic amnesia: meaning
Also: post-hypnotic amnesia, trance amnesia, memory loss hypnosis, forgetting after hypnosis

Hypnotic amnesia is one of the most dramatized features of hypnosis and one of the most misunderstood. Films show people waking with no memory of an hour of control. Real amnesia is far milder, much less common and not a loss of control.
What hypnotic amnesia means
There are two forms. Spontaneous amnesia happens without being suggested: after a deep trance you remember only fragments, and parts of the session feel dreamlike or missing. Suggested amnesia is deliberate: the hypnotist says that you will not remember a number, a word or a particular moment until a cue is given, and for a responsive person that holds. In both forms the memory is stored, merely hard to reach, which is why a cue or a later prompt can bring it back.
How common is it

It varies a lot. Highly responsive people may produce it; most people recall everything, even after a deep session. Long, drowsy sessions and late-night listening produce the most vague recall, not necessarily from amnesia but from falling asleep or drifting. Treat it as a quirk of focused attention, not as a sign of success.
Myths
- You lose time. No. You are aware during the session, even if you later remember poorly.
- Someone can make you do things you will not remember. Hypnosis does not remove your judgement, and suggestions that conflict with your values are refused.
- Forgetting means a deep trance. Not always. Depth and amnesia correlate, but you can have either without the other. See deep trance.
- Memories are erased. Suggested forgetting is a temporary block that fades, often by the end of the session or on a release word.
Amnesia in conditioning work

When triggers are installed, some designers add a gentle forgetting layer so the trigger works without conscious analysis. I rarely do this heavily. A listener who understands what is installed is more at ease and in more control, and the guide on consent in hypnosis explains why transparency matters. Whether or not you remember every word, nothing in a session should surprise you.
Safety
Selective forgetting should never be used to hide anything done to you. For self-directed or recorded sessions it is rarely used at all. If you wake from audio unsure what happened, you can replay it, read the title and description, or just continue. Forgetting is not harmful in itself, and a good session ends with a clear wake-up and aftercare.
Practical note
If you want to remember details, keep a journal by the bed and write down impressions immediately. Memory of a trance fades quickly like a dream, and writing within a minute of surfacing preserves most of it.
Examples in a sentence
- He remembered only fragments of the session, a kind of hypnotic amnesia.
- The stage hypnotist told them they would forget the number seven.
- I woke up and honestly couldn't recall the last ten minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Is hypnotic amnesia real?
Yes, in a mild form. Some people forget parts of a session spontaneously or because a suggestion told them to. It is not total or dangerous, and the memory often returns with a cue.
Can hypnosis make me forget things permanently?
No. Suggested forgetting fades, usually within minutes or hours, or when you are given a cue. Hypnosis does not erase memories or damage your recall in any lasting way.
Why do I forget hypnosis audio I listened to?
Often because you fell asleep or drifted into a very relaxed state where attention was loose. That is common at night. It does not mean the session failed; replay it earlier in the evening.
Does amnesia mean I was out of control?
No. You stay in control throughout, and you would respond to anything important. Poor recall afterwards is about attention and memory formation, not about someone else acting through you.
