What to Wear Under a Dress: Slips, Shapewear, Tuck and Forms
By Aria Wilde · updated 2026-10-19 · 4 min read

A dress only looks as good as what is under it. The right layers remove bumps, add shape and stop static, and a good set takes ten minutes to put on. This is the order I use, and what each piece does.
The base layer: tuck and underwear
Start with the smooth foundation, because everything else sits on it.
- Tuck. Gaff, tucking tape or tucking panties flatten the front. Compare options in gaff vs tucking tape and learn the method in how to tuck comfortably.
- Limit the time. Plan for a few hours at a stretch, with breaks. The how long can you tuck guide covers the safe limits.
- Panties over the top in a seamless cut. Briefs or a high-leg style hide the gaff line better than thongs. See panties for men.
Check the front view in the mirror with a thin fabric draped over. If you can see an outline in the mirror, you will see it in a dress.
Chest: bra and forms

A bra gives a dress something to hang from.
- Choose a smooth, seamless cup under jersey and clingy fabrics; lace shows through.
- Size by band first. The band does 80 percent of the work; cups are filled with forms. Use the first bra guide.
- Forms: silicone sits heavier and moves naturally; foam is light and breathable. Silicone vs foam breast forms compares them, and the breast forms guide covers fitting.
- Strapless dresses: use a strapless bra with silicone grip strips, or a bralette with clear straps.
Shapewear
Shapewear smooths the waist, hips and back. Choose it for the dress you are wearing.
| Piece | Best under | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-thigh shaper short | Fitted skirts, pencil dresses | Prevents thigh rub and gives a smooth hip line |
| High-waist brief | A-line and jersey dresses | Smooths the stomach |
| Bodysuit | Backless, clingy styles | Needs a snap crotch for comfort |
| Waist cincher | Waist-defining styles | Wear short periods; see waist cincher for men |
| Hip pads | Straight-cut frames | See the hip pads guide |
Do not buy shapewear a size too small hoping to compress more. It rolls at the edges, and the roll shows through the dress. Pick your real size, and use the layer to smooth, not to shrink.
Slip and static control
A half-slip or full slip stops fabric from sticking to tights, hides panty lines and adds opacity to light fabrics. Match the length so it sits 2-3 cm shorter than the hem. Choose satin or microfibre. If static shows, use a spritz of water on the slip or a drop of hand lotion on your legs. Cotton blends breathe better than polyester in hot weather.
Hosiery
Sheer tights smooth the leg and unify the colour. Stay with 15-20 denier for a natural look. For a bare-leg summer dress, use sheer hold-ups or just a good moisturiser. Pantyhose for men covers sizing, and stockings and garter belts cover thigh-highs. A pair of cotton-gusset tights is gentler on the skin during a long wear.
Putting it together: the order

- Tuck and secure.
- Seamless panties.
- Shapewear, if the dress needs it.
- Bra and forms.
- Tights, hip pads if you use them.
- Slip.
- Dress, then shoes.
Put the dress on over your head only if the neckline is loose, or step into it and zip it up with a loop of ribbon tied to the zip pull.
Common problems and quick fixes
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Visible bulge at the front | Loose gaff or thin dress | Retuck, add a second layer of shapewear, choose a lined dress |
| Dress rides up | No slip, static | Add a slip, spritz water on it |
| Strap digging in | Band too loose, forms heavy | Tighten the band, move the load to the band not the strap |
| Roll line at the waist | Shapewear too small | Go up a size, or choose a high-waist style |
| Overheating | Too many synthetic layers | Cotton-gusset pieces, thin slip, plan breaks |
| Tights sagging | Wrong size | Size by height and weight, wear a slightly tighter waistband brief |
A good habit is to keep a "dress kit" bag: spare tights, tuck tape, safety pins, double-sided fashion tape and a small lint roller. Fashion tape stops a neckline from gaping and holds a strap in place, and the lint roller rescues a dark dress in thirty seconds. If you wear forms, pack a small cloth to wipe them; they pick up dust and body oils during a long day.
Check before you leave

Walk, sit and bend in front of a mirror. Check for lines at the hem, at the sides and the back. Sit down on a chair and look at the front: tucking should stay put, and the dress should not ride up. If something moves, fix it now. For the first few times, wear the whole set at home for an hour to find the pressure points. Sissy Hypnosis for Getting Dressed makes the process calm and almost ceremonial, and the Sissy Academy path shows how dressing fits into daily practice.
Frequently asked questions
What do crossdressers wear under a dress?
A tucking garment or gaff, seamless panties, shapewear if needed, a bra with forms, sheer tights and a slip. Each layer smooths one area and prevents clinging or visible lines.
Do I need shapewear under a dress?
Not always. Loose A-line dresses often work without it, but fitted styles look much smoother with a shaper short or high-waist brief in your real size.
Should I wear a slip under a dress?
Yes for thin, clingy or light-coloured fabrics. A slip prevents static, hides panty lines and adds opacity. Keep it 2-3 cm shorter than the hem.
How do I stop panty lines showing?
Choose a seamless, high-leg cut in a colour close to your skin tone, put shapewear over the top and wear a slip. Check the view from behind in daylight.
