Somnambulism: meaning
Also: somnambulistic trance, somnambulist, deep trance level

In ordinary language, somnambulism means sleepwalking. In hypnosis it means something different: the deepest recognised level of trance, where you can function with open eyes while your inner experience is intensely focused and suggestible.
What somnambulism means in hypnosis
The word comes from Latin somnus (sleep) and ambulare (walk), literally "sleep walking". Early hypnotists noticed that subjects at the deepest stage looked awake and moved about yet seemed lost in another state, so they borrowed the term. Today it appears in depth scales to mark the top of the range.
Somnambulism vs sleepwalking
| Hypnotic somnambulism | Sleepwalking | |
|---|---|---|
| Cause | deliberate hypnosis | sleep disorder |
| Awareness | focused, can respond | largely unaware |
| Control | listener can end it | not controllable |
| Memory | may or may not remember | usually no memory |
| Safety | fine in a safe setting | needs medical attention if frequent |
If you came to this page worried about night wandering, that is a sleep-medicine matter and unrelated to hypnosis.
Depth scales and where it sits
Traditional scales such as the Davis-Husband and Arons scales divide trance into light, medium and deep. Somnambulism is the deep end. Modern researchers see depth as a continuum and measure responsiveness to suggestion instead, but the older labels persist in training. My guide to levels of hypnosis depth explains the scales and why depth matters less than you might think.
What it looks like

A somnambulistic subject may:
- open their eyes and talk while remaining in trance
- experience a vivid positive hallucination, such as seeing something not there
- or a negative one, not noticing something that is there
- show spontaneous amnesia after the session
- respond to post-hypnotic suggestion reliably
Only a small share of people reach it, often cited as around ten to fifteen percent, and it usually takes practice and strong rapport.
Do you need to reach it?
No. Most useful hypnosis, including relaxation, habit change and erotic conditioning, works at light to medium levels. Many listeners worry they are "not deep enough" because they never feel dramatically different. Light trance feels like being relaxed and absorbed, with thoughts still around, and it works. See why can't I get hypnotized for reassurance.
Somnambulism in stage and erotic work

Stage hypnotists select volunteers who show somnambulistic traits, since these people can act out suggestions with eyes open. In erotic hypnokink, the same trait is associated with immersive scenes where the listener can respond, speak or move while still deeply absorbed. Deep Sissy Hypno is one of my longer, deeper sessions, aimed at listeners who like to go as far as they can.
Getting deeper safely
Practise regularly, keep sessions at the same time and place, and use techniques like fractionation. Each repeated cycle builds the skill. Details in how to go deeper in trance. Always include a full awakener.
Examples in a sentence

- "Only a few people reach somnambulism, and you do not need it."
- "The volunteer showed somnambulistic traits, eyes open and fully absorbed."
Frequently asked questions
Is hypnotic somnambulism the same as sleepwalking?
No. Hypnotic somnambulism is a deep, deliberate trance in which you stay responsive and can end the state. Sleepwalking is a sleep disorder where you move without awareness. They share a word, not a mechanism.
How deep is somnambulism compared with normal trance?
It sits at the top of classical depth scales, beyond light and medium trance. Features include eyes-open trance, vivid hallucination and amnesia. Most people never need to reach it for hypnosis to be useful.
Can anyone reach somnambulism?
Not everyone. It depends on natural responsiveness plus practice and rapport. Estimates vary, but a minority reach it. Lack of this level does not mean hypnosis is not working for you.
